Pratt, was originally intended to be a revision of F.N. Robinson's 2nd Edition of "The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer". It soon became clear, however, that the study of Chaucer had so greatly developed since Robinson completed his work that in fairness both to Robinson's memory & to Chaucer's readers a new edition was required. Texts had to be re-edited, the introductory materials completely rewritten, glosses added, and the Bibliography, Explanatory Notes, Textual Notes, Glossary, & Index of Proper Names all greatly expanded. Robinson's 2nd Edition remained the model.
