Nach Jahrzehnten strikter Planungsvorgaben im Kommunismus begann in den 1990er-Jahren eine Zeit des informellen Bauens unter Bedingungen des anything goes everywhere. Der massive Zuzug von Menschen in die Hauptstadt Tirana und an die größeren Küsten- und Hafenorte hat einen Wildwuchs an neuer Architektur hervorgebracht, die ohne Rücksicht auf kommunale Bedürfnisse errichtet wurde. In dieser Zeit entstanden auch die Kioske, jene Hütten und Buden, die zumeist auf öffentlichem Grund illegal zu kommerziellen Zwecken errichtet wurden. Auch die ersten touristischen Kleinunternehmen an der Küste wurden mit Kiosken betrieben. Mittlerweile sind diese vielerorts von mächtigen Hotelanlagen verdrängt, die das Landschaftsbild entlang der Küste mehr und mehr in Beschlag nehmen. Kioske befasst sich mit diesen Transformationen. Ihre Vorläufigkeit und ihre ephemere Ästhetik bilden den Ausgangspunkt für eine vielschichtige Auseinandersetzung mit Architektur als Funktion und Kunst, mit sich rasch wandelnden Lebenswelten in peripheren Gebieten, aber auch mit Fragen der Besitznahme der Küste, ihrer Ausbeutung und den schwerwiegenden ökologischen und sozialen Folgen, die damit einhergehen.
