Hardback. Condición: Fair. These centuries, as the author demonstrates, were the era in which the most deeply rooted of ancient institutions disappeared for all time. By 476 the Roman empire had vanished from western Europe; by 655 the Persian empire had vanished from the Near East. Mr. Brown, Professor of History at Princeton University, examines these changes and men's reactions to them, but his account shows that the period was also one of outstanding new beginnings and defines the far-reaching impact both of Christianity on Europe and of Islam on the Near East. The result is a lucid answer to a crucial question in world history; how the exceptionally homogeneous Mediterranean world of c. 200 A.D. became divided into the three mutually estranged societies of the Middle Ages: Catholic Western Europe, Byzantium, and Islam. We still live with the results of these contrasts. …

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. The Christianisation of the Roman world lies at the root of modern Europe, yet at the time it was a tentative and piecemeal process. Peter Brown's study examines the factors which proved decisive and the compromises which made the emergence of the Christian 'thought world' possible. He shows how contemporary narratives wavered between declarations of definitive victory and a sombre sense of the strength of the pre-Christian past, reflecting the hopes and fears of different generations faced with different social and political situations. He examines the social factors which muted the sharp intolerance which pervades the contemporary literary evidence, and he shows how Christian holy men were less representatives of a triumphant and intransigent faith than negotiators, at ground level, of a working compromise between the new faith and traditional ways of dealing with the supernatural world. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Soft cover. Condición: Near Fine. 1st Edition. xxii+262 pages with maps and index. Octavo (8 1/4" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's pictorial wrappers. First edition. The Ransom of the Soul: Afterlife and Wealth in Early Western Christianity is an acclaimed 2015 historical study written by Peter Brown, professor emeritus at Princeton University and a foundational scholar in the field of Late Antiquity. The book tracks a major shift in the Western Christian imagination between 250 and 650 CE. It explores how changing social and economic structures altered how early Christians believed money could bridge heaven and earth to secure salvation for individual souls. In the 3rd century (the era of Cyprian of Carthage), Christian focus rested heavily on the ultimate resurrection and the unique, immediate entry of martyrs into heaven. Other Christians simply entered a state of peaceful, painless rest (refrigerium). By the 7th century (the era of Julian of Toledo), the afterlife had transformed into a highly individualized, daunting marathon where each soul moved toward heaven at its own speed based on a precise calculation of merits and sins. Condition: Light edge wear else near fine.…

Connolly is Krieger-Eisenhower Professor in the political science department at Hopkins where he teaches political theory. His early book, The Terms of Political Discourse, was awarded the Benjamin Lippincott Award in 1999 as 'a work of exceptional quality that is still considered significant at least 15 years after publication.' In a poll of American political theorists published in PS in 2010, he was ranked the fourth most influential political theorist in America over the last twenty years, after Rawls, Habermas, and Foucault. His work focuses on the issues of democratic pluralism, capitalism, inequality, fascism, and bumpy intersections between capitalism and planetary amplifiers in climate change." - Johns Hopkins University.…
