Coloured frontispiece. 289 pp., red top edged, with numerous black and white photographs and drawings. The book is in very good condition. There is minor shelf-wear to the extremities of the cover especially the head and tail of the spine, the spine is lightly sunned. The hinges are intact but in one place the book has been pressed flat and the webbing can be seen, the binding is a little slack. There is offsetting to the feps. Otherwise the pages are clean and unmarked. A nice copy.

A number of excellent books have been issued dealing with inns and coaching from the anecdotal and descriptive point of view, and the literature on the subject is an extensive and growing one, but it seemed to us that there was room for a fairly comprehensive survey of the inn, considered both as a structure and as a repository of social life.
