Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. Richard Sparks [Frontispiece] Ilustrador. A beautiful black leatherbound edition from the Easton Press. Text tight and clean; no markings from previous owners; full leather over moire endpapers, all edges gilt with a ribbon bound in. Four raised bands on the spine, with gilt detailing and titles on spine and cover. 'Aristophanes (Greek: ???????????; c.?446 - c.?386 BC) was an Ancient Greek comic playwright from Athens and a poet of Old Attic Comedy. He wrote in total forty plays, of which eleven survive virtually complete today. These provide the most valuable examples of a genre of comic drama known as Old Comedy and are used to define it, along with fragments from dozens of lost plays by Aristophanes and his contemporaries. Also known as "The Father of Comedy" and "the Prince of Ancient Comedy", Aristophanes has been said to recreate the life of ancient Athens more convincingly than any other author. His powers of ridicule were feared and acknowledged by influential contemporaries. No group or class was exempt from Aristophanes' barbs, and as a result, it can be difficult to determine exactly what moral or lesson we are meant to learn from specific plays. The sympathetic characters are often people who wish to be left alone to enjoy their private lives in a traditional way, untroubled by wars and politicians and intellectuals, but no final decision is made as to who, or which cause, is "right".' 393 pages. 9.4 x 6.5 inches. Includes "a note about Four Comedies" from The Easton Press. May require additional postage. This listing was made by a small independent book shop.
