Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. Illustrated by B/w illus. Ilustrador. Eleventh Edition. Vg in blue cloth, gilt titling to spine (Minor wear; light bumping to corners); 8vo, 948pp. An interesting association copy, signed and inscribed by Captain D. O. Kane, commanding officer of the submarine the USS Tang, which sank from the circular return of its own torpedo, in oct. 1944. Capt. Kane was one of only 9 survivors (78 crew members perished) of the Tang when it sank in 180 feet of water due to a strike from a malfunctioning torpedo which turned back on the sub, striking it in the stern and sinking the vessel. Kane and the nine survivors were then taken prisoner by the japanese and held for two months. Kane earned the Congressional medal of honor for his bravery and leadership during the incident and went on to become one of the Navy's most decorated Submarine Commanders culminating in the naming of a Guided Missle Cruiser after him (USS O'Kane: DDG-77). The inscription must have been made very shortly after his return to the US, after being released as a prisoner, as the book was published in june 1945; just 8 months after the sinking of the Tang. The inscription makes a curious reference to the torpedoes stating: "Dear Byron, you were right on the warheads of the Torpedes, against the rules to mention it, but from the entire crew, thanks. Dick. Capt D. O. Kane UssTang + Crew". Torpedo malfunctions were also blamed for the sinking of the USS Tullibee prior to the Tang accident, and confirmed by the soul survivor of that sub. The reference in the inscription indicates that this information found its way to Capt. Kane and he was perhaps forewarned about the possibility of the torpedo circling back around to target the firing ship. The Captain is credited with taking emergency maneuvers prior to the torpedo striking which resulted in the torpedo striking the stern of the sub rather than amid ship, which would have resulted in a total loss with the likelyhood of no survivors. As Kane indicates, it would be against regulations to remark about the torpedo malfunctioning, thus indicating that, though the problem was known, the Navy did not necessarily want the information widely known. Our research has turned up little concerning any investigation of the torpedo or any investigations conducted at the time. Capt. O'Kane's and the adventures on the USS Tang are documented in the book, "Clear the Bridge". Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Association Copy. Book.
