Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. Cloth, dj. Minor shelf wear. Else a bright, clean copy. Conflict, Conquest, and Conversion surveys two thousand years of the Christian missionary enterprise in the Middle East within the context of the region's political evolution. Its broad, rich narrative…follows Christian missions as they interacted with imperial powers and as the momentum of religious change shifted from Christianity to Islam and back, adding new dimensions to the history of the region and the nature of the relationship between the Middle East and the West. Historians and political scientists increasingly recognize the importance of integrating religion into political analysis, and this volume, using long-neglected sources, uniquely advances this effort. It surveys Christian missions from the earliest days of Christianity to the present, paying particular attention to the role of Christian missions, both Protestant and Catholic, in shaping the political and economic imperialism of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Eleanor H. Tejirian and Reeva Spector Simon delineate the ongoing tensions between conversion and the focus on witness and "good works" within the missionary movement, which contributed to the development and spread of nongovernmental organizations. Through its conscientious, systematic study, this volume offers an unparalleled encounter with the social, political, and economic consequences of such trends.

First Edition. Why did a group from the Iraqi army seize control of the government and wage a disastrous war against Great Britain, rejecting British and liberal values for those of a militaristic Germany? What impact did these actions have on the thirty-year regime of Saddam Hussein? Departing from previous studies explaining m…odern Iraqi history in terms of class theory, Reeva Simon shows that cultural and ideological factors played an equal, if not more important, role in shaping events. In 1921 the British created Iraq, and an entourage of ex-Ottoman army officers, the Sharifians, became the new ruling elite. Simon contends that this elite, returning to an Iraq made up of different ethnic, religious, and social groups, had to weld these disparate elements into a nation. Pan-Arabism was to be the new ideological source of unity and loyalty. Schools and the army became the means through which to implant it, and a series of military coups gave the officers the chance to act in its name. The result was an abortive revolt against Britain in 1941. And the legacy of the revolt is still apparent in the next two generations of Iraqi officers that led to the regime of Saddam Hussein. This updated edition locates the sources of Iraqi nationalism in the experience of these ex-Ottoman army officers who used the emergent pan-Arabism to weld a disparate population into a nation. Simon shows that the relationships forged between Iraqi officers and Germans in Istanbul before WWI left deep legacies that go a long way toward explaining the disastrous war against Great Britain in 1941, the rejection of liberal values, the revolution of 1958 in which the military finally seized power, and the outlook of the leadership recently overthrown by American and British armies. An exceptional copy in the original title-blocked cloth. Particularly well-preserved; tight, bright, clean and strong. Literally as new; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 235 pages; Description: xv, 235 p. ; 24 cm. Hardcover. Condición: Very good. First Printing [Stated]. xx, 545, [3] pages. Bibliography. Contributors. No dust jacket present. Minor edge discoloration at back pages and endpaper. Jacob Coleman Hurewitz (November 11, 1914 May 16, 2008) was an American political scientist. Hurewitz graduated from Trinity College in Hartford, C…onnecticut in 1936, then did his graduate work at Columbia, making what was then an unusual decision to concentrate on the Middle East. He worked for the Near East section of the Office of Strategic Services during World War II, then worked successively at the State Department, as a political adviser on Palestine to the President's cabinet and for the United Nations secretariat. Professor Hurewitz began studying Middle Eastern politics in 1950, before the field had emerged as an academic discipline. From 1970 until 1984, Professor Hurewitz was director of the Columbia University's Middle East Institute, when he retired. In 1972, Hurewitz established the Columbia University Seminar on the Middle East, which he continued to chair until he was nearly 90. His publications influenced many other historians. For example, Wm. Roger Louis wrote in his book "The British Empire in the Middle East, 19451951" (Clarendon, 1984) that "my views on Arab nationalism and Zionism, and on the United States and the Middle East, have been influenced by the sensitive and dead-on-the-mark observations of J. C. Hurewitz." The Hoover Institution Archives hold his papers. The papers by Hurewitz's colleagues and former students correspond to the range in time and space of his own interests and studies: from Morocco to Iran and from the 17th century to the present day. The struggle for Palestine, needless to say, gets due attention. Among the contributors are Don Peretz, John Waterbury, Gary Sick, Lisa Anderson and Ann Mosely Lesch. Among the topics covered are Middle East, Jews, Arabs, North Africa, Egyptian-Israeli, Bedouin, Palestine, Mufti of Jerusalem, PLO, Terrorism, Immigration, Foreign Policy, Moshe Dayan, Democracy, Islam, Field Research, Technology Transfer, Economic Development, Ottoman Empire, Sinai, Negev, Passports, Demographic Patterns, Ottoman Military Conscription, Hebron, International Arbitration, Taba, Camp David Autonomy Plan, Mzali, Tunisia, Nasser, Turkish Iron and Steel Industry, Water Resources, Nile Basin, Sallee Rovers, Morocco, Corsairs, Lebanese Civil War, Jordan's Foreign Policy, British Naval Policy, United States Economic Assistance, and Peacekeeping. This is an increasingly scarce Festschrifft. In academia, a Festschrift is a book honoring a respected person, especially an academic, and presented during their lifetime. It generally takes the form of an edited volume, containing contributions from the honoree's colleagues, former pupils, and friends. Festschriften are often titled something like Essays in Honour of. Originating in Germany before World War I, this European tradition of honoring special achievements in science and culture was carried to the United States by scientists who escaped the Nazis. In the second half of the 20th century, the practice became used internationally. Since no English term for such a book to mark a special occasion had been in use, the German word Festschrift has been incorporated into English and is frequently used without the italics that designate a foreign term, although the capitalization of the first letter is usually retained from German. A Festschrift contains original contributions by the honored academic's close colleagues, often including their former doctoral students. It is typically published on the occasion of the honoree's retirement, significant birthday, or other notable career anniversary. The essays usually relate in some way to, or reflect upon, the honoree's contributions to their scholarly field, but can include important original research by the authors.
