''During July and August 1972 the six-man Greenland (Cape Farewell) Expedition visited an Area of Southern Greenland hitherto unexlored, namely the mountain group on the east side pf Sondre Sermilik. Exceptionally good weather gave the party the opportunity of making 38 ascents, up to Difficile in standard, of 28mountains, 23 of which were previously unclimbed. . . From the outset the Expedition was purely a mountaineering-exploration venture with no scientific work attached. However apart from the mountaineering achievements, the parte collected and identified 157 species of flowering plants (one of which is new to Southern Greenland) and also made studies of the Norse ruins in the Expedition area.''('Summary')- Probably Smith's first Greenland Mountaineering Expedition but not his last. . . --- Minimally used; A VERY GOOD AND SET.

Añadir al carrito4to. [68 leaves (unnumbered).], typescript, original typewriter copy, rather than carbon copy, or later mimeograph, all on toned Wartime paper stock. With 81 mounted tipped-in silver gelatin photos, 9 sized 2.5 x 3 in., the remainder all sized 3.75 x 4.75 in., 1 folding mimeographed chart, signed by nearby Air Base officers from… Clovis Army Airfield. Flexible tan Acco-Fastener 2-prong binder, w/ slides, typescript label mounted front cover, partially removed (uniform interior toning to many of the leaves as typical for Wartime paper, occasional closed tears, scuffing), still a VG exemplar, w/ numerous ink manuscript notes by Lawler, signed by Lawler on first leaf of report. This original "Rent Investigation" photo-illustrated report offers an invaluable textual and visual snapshot of the state of American housing in the West following the Great Depression during World War II, where 75% of homes and apartments were not electrified, and 40% were not fitted with indoor plumbing. This document clearly delineates many different residential and slum apartment blocks which were not only substandard as individual housing when compared to modern standards, but that rents had been illegally raised from 4 to 10 times pre-War rental rates. This work was prepared as a detailed snapshot report of Wartime rent profiteering against the nearby airmen, and their families of the Clovis Air Base (now Cannon Field), in Clovis, NM following the establishment of the Office of Price Administration after the passage of the 1942 Federal Emergency Price Control Act. In addition, although there was considerable support for the War on the Home Front, Lawler states while preparing "these pictures. . . taken during an investigation and compliance drive in June and July, 1943. . . most landlords in Clovis do not believe in O.P.A., or Rent Control. They have expressed themselves as being opposed to it and have organized to fight it. . . The properties described herein are few in number, but they represent a cross-section of the whole city. It is admitted that some of these are "worst examples," but worst examples are so numerous that they almost set a pattern for the town." The Office of Price Administration had designated areas near all defense facilities across as the U.S., such as the nearby Clovis Air Base -- to have maximum rent ceilings, often freezing them at earlier 1941-1942 levels. Violators could face criminal penalties, including fines up to $ 1000 and six months in prison per violation. Examples depicted here encompass the property called "Spanish Apartments," located at First and Edwards Street described as "The building in a long tin covered one, containing 12, 2-room apartments which can be rented as 24 1-room units. General construction is very poor, furnishings are scant, mostly old second hand stuff. No electricity and gas connections. One outhouse with shower is used by fourteen families. . . tenants throw dishwater, etc. in the yard." Another is Johnson's Camp and Grocery at 7th & West Streets. "The owner of this property has persistently refused to register with the Area Rent Office. The rents for the cabins are very low - $5.00 to $ 6.00 per week -- but investigation disclosed that he owns three other rent houses on which the rent has been increased since March 1, 1942, and that he has a habit of evicting tenants without due process of the law. He simply opens the door of the cabin with a pass-key, during the tenants absence, and piles all the furniture and belongings on the side-walk." Other nearby rentals included unvented gas stoves, no fire exits, open eaves with no interior insulation, problems with over 24 reported cases of "infantile paralysis" (Polio), walls covered in old cardboard boxes for construction materials; the level of filth and decay was nauseating to the investigator; and also reports on travel trailers put on blocks, and simply parked on city sidewalks to be rented at exorbitant rates of $ 6.00 per week to US Airmen and their families. Of particular interest are the shacks hastily constructed from 1942-1943 for African-American "Negro" or "Colored" airmen, rented out at $ 100.00 per month, and subsequently completely destroyed in fire on the J.S. Fitzhugh property at the 600 Block, North First Street. While the Eurocaucasian "White" trainees were assigned to flight operations and support for B-24 Liberator Bombers, the African-American Black personnel were rigidly segregated and restricted to base support, administration and quartermaster roles, and in fact enforced separate religious services for Black & White troops. Clovis had a long history of racist segregation, preventing African-Americans to enter bars, or saloons; had to maintain a Federated Progressive Club with showers to Black railroad travelers could shower and stay as they were not allowed in local hotels, and their USO activities during the War were also stringently curtailed. Lawler (b. 1902) ran a beauty shop and parlor with his wife, while he worked for the Works Progress Administration from 1935 to the beginning of World War II as a compliance investigator on New Deal Projects in and around New Mexico, and then later for the OPA following passage of the Emergency legislation, and the dismantling of the WPA. Although several printed reports were issued through the end of 1943 for the OPA, this cataloguer could find no evidence of a surviving similar original report with mounted or tipped-in photos, except for one specifically printed on price control and rationing in the Territory of Hawaii published in late 1943. No similar copies in Worldcat. ; See: Hugh Rockoff, Drastic Measures: A History of Wage and Price Controls in the United States (1984); Jean Fulton, Draft Narratives: The History of African American Segregation in New Mexico (2021).

A custom-made morocco folder with gilt-tooled borders and title "Wheelus Air Base Tripoli, Libya, North Africa 1963-1966" on the front cover. A very good collection with strong, interesting prints. Historically significant collection of early photos documenting the final years of Wheelus Air Base and pre-war Tripoli through the eyes of an American serviceman and his family. Wheelus Air Base was one of the largest U.S. military installations overseas from 1943 until 1970. Established in the 1920s by the Italian Air Force as Mellaha Airfield, it was captured by Allied forces during WWII and subsequently operated by the U.S. Army Air Forces. After the war, Wheelus became a strategic hub for American operations in the Mediterranean and North Africa. The base (ca. 20,000 acres) included extensive runways, hangars, bombing ranges, maintenance depots, schools, and recreational facilities. It remained under U.S. control until 1970, when the base was handed over to the Libyan government following an agreement with Gaddafi's new regime. As follows from the collection, the photos were taken and collected by the family of a non-commissioned American serviceman stationed at Wheelus Air Base between 1963 and 1966. The album opens with a large-format image showing the serviceman shaking hands with another U.S. Army officer in an official setting, likely during a recognition or congratulatory event. A sign on the wall suggests that both men were affiliated with the U.S. Army Map Service, which operated in Libya at the time. Another image depicts a detailed map of the base, possibly prepared with the serviceman's participation. About twenty-five well-executed photos depict the grounds of Wheelus Air Base in the mid-1960s, including views of the memorial to the 7272nd Fighter Training Wing, the NCO Open Mess Club, Wheelus Television station, the base exchange, Pan American aircraft at a refueling point, and various U.S. Army and Air Force planes & machines. Several images document a military parade with soldiers marching in uniform, waving American and what appears to be Libyan flags, and accompanied by a military orchestra. Over thirty excellent early photos portray Tripoli before the later war damage and the 1969 Libyan Revolution. The images show the Royal Palace, Bab Hawara Gate, Martyrs' Square, the ruins of Leptis Magna, the Arch of Marcus Aurelius, and general city panoramas with visible cars and horse-drawn carts. Especially interesting are several candid urban scenes, showing a Santa Claus riding a camel and greeting children and their parents. The other images include two color chromogenic prints of locals at a camel market, as well as scenes of the compiler's relatives riding horses and camels, strolling through the streets, and attending a rodeo. Overall, historically significant collection of early photos documenting the final years of Wheelus Air Base.
