A Ge'ez manuscript Psalter from the government scriptorium of Haile Selassie, illustrated with twenty-five hand-painted scenes. Copied on particularly fine vellum, this psalter comprises twenty prayers, canonical texts, and apocrypha, including a very good example of the so-called Hebraic Song of Songs (see Ludolf, Gleave). The harags at the beginning of the first page of text indicate its origin in the Ethiopian government scriptorium during the reign of Haile Selassie. - The manuscript opens with a prayer: "This Psalter is like a garden: it contains all flowers and gives seeds and brings blessing and drives out demons and attracts angels". The twenty-five illustrations, each in excellent condition, show various Biblical scenes, largely from the New Testament and often following the life of Jesus Christ. These include the birth of Jesus, John baptizing Jesus in the River Jordan, Jesus healing the sick and blind, the beheading of Peter, and finally the Madonna and Child, with the patron who commissioned the manuscript depicted below. - Spine professionally repaired, otherwise in excellent condition, with only minor age-related warping and yellowing to vellum. - Originally from the government scriptorium of Ethiopia. - EMIP 2281. With Christianity introduced to the region in the fourth century, the earliest attested Ge'ez Gospels are dated (with some debate) to the sixth century. Rare, perhaps even scarcer than the 1701 first edition, since this edition was meant to be used in the field and few copies survived. - A pencil note by a previous owner on reverse of the front free endpaper copies some information obtained from a letter of the Edinburgh bookseller Alan Grant, as follows: "The type is that used in Ludolf's 1661 Grammar - but not his later fount used in the 1701 Psalter. See J. J. Hall's Life and Correspondence of Henry Salt, 1837 p. 479. 'I have sent you the copies of the Psalms published in Ethiopic, for the Abyssinians, as specimens; four of them handsomely bound in red, and six plain. I have about two hundred of the last and about twenty of these in fine bindings to send to you when I can find an opportunity, which you will give away to those they will be of most use to". This is one of the copies bound in red. - Covers rubbed and scuffed; wear to all edges; loss in places to spine. Webbing on spine intact. From the translation of Abdallah ibn al-Fadl al Antaki, printed for the first time in Aleppo, then reprinted various times by Athanase IV (born Athanase Dabbas). "In 1733 in al-Shuwair, a town in the Lebanese mountains, a printing press was set up with the support of the Jesuits in the Greek Catholic monastery of Saint John the Baptist, which was the real "pilot workshop" of indigenous Arab typography. This was the main workplace of Abdallah az-Zahir (d. 1748), a Syrian Catholic who had left Aleppo because of differences with Atanasiyus ad-Dabbas and the Byzantine Orthodox Church and found refuge, together with other brothers of the faith, in al-Shuwair. The typographic style of the monastic printing press bears the unmistakable hallmark of az-Zahir. Instructed in the goldsmith's art by his father, he later taught himself additional arts such as engraving, painting and woodcarving. Using these skills, he drafted elements of book design, often evidently inspired by European originals. But az-Zahir's indisputably greatest contribution was that he supplied the Shuwair workshop with his own Arabic types and thereby gave the monastery its really valuable asset". Blindstamped German pigskin on four raised double bands, dated 1580 on the upper cover, with a central panel of Fides and Spes ("Que Vocem Insigni Caritu / De Nomine Virtus Omnia Q / Pietas Suatet Obire Sequo", signed "MM" on a rock) on the front cover and of Caritas with a beggar ("Impetrat Alma Fides Cri/sto Quam Dante Salutem / Expectare Soror Spes Ani", signed "M M" in the bottom corners) on the back, both enclosed within rollstamps of tendrils and Reformers. A fine copy of the first book ever printed in Ge'ez, also "the first book to be printed in the West in an oriental language other than Hebrew, and the first psalter to be printed in a language other than Hebrew, Greek, or Latin" (Austern). Apart from the Psalter, it contains the Song of Solomon as well as Biblical hymns and prayers. - In his preface, the editor Johannes Potken, provost of St George's Church at Cologne, describes "how he had heard Ethiopian strangers in Rome reciting sacred hymns, in which he recognized the names of the Blessed Virgin, the Apostles and certain saints. Aroused by curiosity he determined to learn Ethiopic - which he calls 'lingua Chaldea' - and eventually succeeded in mastering enough of the language to enable him to publish this edition in the native character" (Darlow/M.). - This is the first book printed in Ethiopic, using a specially made font to correspond to the Ethiopic syllabary. Remarkably, Potken's manuscript source can be identified as an Ethiopic Psalter in the Vatican Library; the original record showing it was loaned to Potken on 28 October 1511 is also preserved there. Potken espoused a private theory that Ethiopic was in fact Chaldaic (Aramaic); he was not dissuaded by the fact, which he acknowledged, that the Jews of Rome were unable to understand the Ethiopians. He also relates that he had been interested in this mysterious part of the world since hearing stories of Prester John in his childhood. In 1518, after his return to Cologne, Potken had the Ethiopic Psalter reprinted, this time as part of a four-language edition that included Hebrew, Greek, and Latin. The font is apparently the same as that of the present edition, abeit in a considerably worn state. - Rare in the trade: only three other copies in auction records since 1958. - Lacking the two middle leaves (2 & 3) in quire [13] (supplied in facsimile). Occasional slight worming to text. Binding very well preserved but silk ties removed; the 16th century owner's once-blindstamped initials appear to have been erased from the upper cover. Curiously, the captions under the plate stamps on the covers are transposed; apart from that, these panels appear to agree with the description given by Semler (Sammlungen zur Geschichte der Formschneidekunst in Teutschlandt [1782], no. 19) of a Latin Bible printed at Tübingen in 1578. While Haebler does not describe these panels, he writes that the bookbinder "M. M." may be "identified without fear of objection with Mathias Moratz of Leipzig", active ca. 1575, who "curiously applied his initials only to his plate stamps, but to these almost without exception" (cf. Haebler I, 297). - Early ink ownership in Ge'ez under the frontispiece: "P'et'irosi P'eshek'atori P'erofesesiri" (Peter, pastor and professor); a 16th century ink note of acquisition on front pastedown: "Emi à Bibliopola Gallo Ioanne Barlemianus Lugdulensi Ao. 1580 mercatum paschali" (bought from the French bookseller Jean Barlemian of Lyons, at the 1580 Easter fair). Small 8vo (105 x 146 mm). 174 ff. Arabic manuscript on European laid paper. Neat vocalized naskh in brown ink, with rubrics and trefoils in red. Later mottled calf with gilt spine. A vivid witness to Melkite devotion in Ottoman Syria, marked by a rare bilingual title and the inclusion of Psalm 151. The Psalter opens with the Psalms of David, the scribe introducing the text in Arabic and adding a Latin heading of his own hand, "Liber Arabicus Psalmorum David", a concise statement of the manuscript's dual cultural horizon between Aleppo's Arabic Melkite tradition and the pull of Rome. - At the close of the Psalms the scribe adds the apocryphal Psalm 151, "outside the number", attributed to David's victory over Goliath, a text preserved in the Septuagint and Syriac yet only seldom encountered in Arabic manuscripts, thus underscoring the manuscript's rarity and the breadth of its textual witness. The volume proceeds to the complete cycle of the Ten Canticles in the Byzantine Arabic recension: the two songs of Moses, the songs of Hannah, Habakkuk, Isaiah, and Jonah, followed by the hymns of the Three Young Men in the Furnace, the second in a shortened form, and concluding with the Magnificat and the Benedictus, reflecting a liturgical sequence characteristic of Byzantine parish and monastic practice in Arabic. - A partly erased Latin ownership on the title-page, "Don pet' melichita alepino", fixes the milieu as the Melkite community of Aleppo and confirms local use; the bilingual habits of the scribe further point to the eighteenth century's Catholic currents within the Melkite world. - Combining Psalms, Canticles, the exceptional presence of Psalm 151, and explicit Aleppine Melkite provenance, the manuscript encapsulates the encounter of Byzantine liturgical continuity with Roman influence in an Arabic-speaking ecclesial setting. - Well preserved. - Ownership inscription in Latin script (partly cancelled) reads: "Don melichita alepino", i.e. Don [Name], a Melkite of Aleppo.

A fragmentary leaf from a very early, unpublished Coptic Psalter, written in the Sahidic dialect of Upper Egypt about 150 years after it was first translated from Greek (see Budge, Nagel). The script here is a fine Coptic Uncial, derived from Greek Uncial, and showing its ultimate debt to older epigraphic letter forms in its monumental and rounded majuscules and absence of spacing between words. - The present fragment comprises more than eight verses from Psalm 85 (86 in the Masoretic tradition): "Rejoice the soul of thy servant: for to thee, O Lord, have I lifted up my soul . In the day of my trouble I cried to thee: for thou didst hear me . Thy mercy is great toward me; and thou hast delivered my soul from the lowest hell. O God, transgressors have risen up against me, and an assembly of violent men have sought my life . But thou, O Lord God, art compassionate and merciful". - Most probably produced for use in the White Monastery (or the Monastery of St. Shenouda), Deir el-Abiad, near Sohag, Egypt, a Coptic Orthodox monastery near the Upper Egyptian city of Sohag. It was founded by St. Pigol in 442 CE, and grew substantially in importance after his nephew St. Shenouda the Archimandrite (d. 466 CE) took over in 385 CE. A prolific writer, he launched a literacy campaign within the monastery, producing a large library and establishing the house as perhaps the most important in the Coptic Church. When the first European visitors reached the monastery, the library was housed in a room to the north of the central apse called the 'Secret Chamber', which could be entered only through a hidden passage. The hoard of more than 9,000 early Coptic leaves was discovered by G. Maspero in 1883, and most of it is now in Paris, Bibliothèque Nationale, but parts are held in the Pierpont Morgan Library, Cambridge University Library and Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana. - Vellum wrinkled. Near-contemporary full limp vellum. First edition of this adaptation of the Psalms, set in Arabic-Latin parallel text. Printed in some 3000 copies, most of which were used for a 1619 re-issue with only the title-page changed. Famous for the clarity and elegance of the typeface created by Savary de Brèves: the extensive vocalisation helped this handy quarto volume achieve immense popularity among oriental scholars throughout Europe. - Formerly it was assumed that the type design was based on specimens Savary had seen during his time as French envoy at Constantinople; today his probable model is believed to be a calligraphical manuscript from Qannubin, preserved in the Bibliotheca Vaticana. The cutting and founding of the types were done in Rome, in collaboration with Stefano Paolini, an experienced printer formerly of the Typographia Medicea. The Psalms' text is based on a manuscript Savary de Brèves had bought in Jerusalem (cf. Rare Psalter from the printing office of the Melkite monastery of St. John the Baptist at al-Shuwayr in the Lebanese Kisrawan mountains, operative between 1734 and 1899, during which time it produced in all 69 Arabic books, including re-editions (cf. Silvestre de Sacy I, pp. 412-414; Middle Eastern Languages and the Print Revolution. A Cross-Cultural Encounter, Westhofen 2002, pp. 179-181). Nasrallah counts 15 editions of the Psalter alone, the last (produced in 1899, the only as-Shuwayr Psalter in the Aboussouan collection) constituting the swan-song of that important press. "Le Psautier a longtemps été le livre classique unique des écoles d'Orient. Formerly it was assumed that the type design was based on specimens Savary had seen during his time as French envoy at Constantinople; today his probable model is believed to be a calligraphical manuscript from Qannubin, preserved in the Bibliotheca Vaticana. The cutting and founding of the types were done in Rome, in collaboration with Stefano Paolini, an experienced printer formerly of the Typographia Medicea. The Psalms' text is based on a manuscript Savary de Brèves had bought in Jerusalem (cf.
