Priestly was an English Protestant theologian, chemist, and grammarian, whose replies to Blackstone's Commentaries reflect his toleration for religious dissenters. Remains an interesting Colonial America imprint despite its apparent flaws.

Joseph Priestley [1733 1804] was an 18th-century English theologian, Dissenting clergyman, natural philosopher, chemist, educator, and Liberal political theorist who published over 150 works. He is usually credited with the discovery of oxygen, having isolated it in its gaseous state. Priestley's science was integral to his theology, and he consistently tried to fuse Enlightenment rationalism with Christian theism.[5] In his metaphysical texts, Priestley attempted to combine theism, materialism, and determinism, a project that has been called "audacious and original".[6] He believed that a proper understanding of the natural world would promote human progress and eventually bring about the Christian Millennium.[6] Priestley, who strongly believed in the free and open exchange of ideas, advocated toleration and equal rights for religious Dissenters, which also led him to help found Unitarianism in England. The controversial nature of Priestley's publications combined with his outspoken support of the French Revolution aroused public and governmental suspicion; he was eventually forced to flee, in 1791, first to London, and then to the United States, after a mob burned down his home and church. He spent the last ten years of his life living in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.Priestley wrote his most important philosophical works during his years with Lord Shelburne. In a series of major metaphysical texts published between 1774 and 1780An Examination of Dr. Reid's Inquiry into the Human Mind (1774), Hartley's Theory of the Human Mind on the Principle of the Association of Ideas (1775), Disquisitions relating to Matter and Spirit (1777), The Doctrine of Philosophical Necessity Illustrated (1777), and Letters to a Philosophical Unbeliever (1780)he argues for a philosophy that incorporates four concepts: determinism, materialism, causation, and necessitarianism. By studying the natural world, he argued, people would learn how to become more compassionate, happy, and prosperous.

From wikipedia: "The Priestley Riots (also known as the Birmingham Riots of 1791) took place from 14 July to 17 July 1791 in Birmingham, England; the rioters' main targets were religious Dissenters, most notably the politically and theologically controversial Joseph Priestley. Both local and national issues stirred the passions of the rioters, from disagreements over public library book purchases, to controversies over Dissenters' attempts to gain full civil rights and their support of the French Revolution. The riots started with an attack on Birmingham's Royal Hotel the site of a banquet organized in sympathy with the French Revolution. Then, beginning with Priestley's church and home, the rioters attacked or burned four Dissenting chapels, twenty-seven houses, and several businesses. Many of them became intoxicated by liquor that they found while looting, or with which they were bribed to stop burning homes. A small core could not be bribed, however, and remained sober. The rioters burned not only the homes and chapels of Dissenters, but also the homes of people they associated with Dissenters, such as members of the scientific Lunar Society. While the riots were not initiated by Prime Minister William Pitt's administration, the national government was slow to respond to the Dissenters' pleas for help. Local Birmingham officials seem to have been involved in the planning of the riots, and they were later reluctant to prosecute any ringleaders. Industrialist James Watt wrote that the riots "divided [Birmingham] into two parties who hate one another mortally".Those who had been attacked gradually left, leaving Birmingham a more conservative city than it had been throughout the eighteenth century.".

Zabriskie with his armorial bookplate on upper pastedown, gilt decorated spine in five compartments, gilt-decorated dentelles, marbled endpapers; boards rubbed and bumped, title page chipped, losing the "V" in vocabulary, with contemporary inscription, moderate foxing, good and sound. A dictionary in the "hard words" tradition, omitting "the common words of the language," and designed for the use of "young ladies, and gentlemen, too, who have not had the advantage of a liberal or learned education" (Preface). Halkett & Laing, Kennedy, and Alston attribute the work to Baskerville himself - an attribution of which I've always been dubious. In the noted dictionary collector Tom Rodger's copy of Alston, he attributes it to Joseph Priestley. George A. Zabriskie was an antiquarian of many talents, and in addition to being a successful businessman, collector, Grolier Club member, was a prolific and capable amateur binder. Brought up as a Calvinist, he early became allied with liberal theology . By the time he went to Warrington his Unitarian ('Socinian') beliefs were well developed, i.e., he rejected the Atonement and the inspiration of the sacred text. In 1755 he put forward the doctrine of the homogeneity of man, which brought upon him the accusation of atheism." DAB.
