A singularly authoritative edition of the "Rule of St. Benedict", by the scholar of the "Rule of the Master", an anonymous collection of monastic precepts composed around 500-530. It was likely used by St Benedict as source material for his own "Rule". The editor of this edition, also edited the definitive edition of "Rule of the Master". The study of the Benedictine Rule and the historical evidence concerning it confirms that it was written by Benedict, in Italy, in the middle of the sixth century. In this edition, the authentic text of Benedict, whose manuscript tradition is immense and multifaceted, is investigated with new certainty and precision, in the light of recent research. Apart from the small Italian edition by G. Penco which already dates from 1958, there has been no scientific edition of the Benedictine Rule. It is to fill such a gap that the present work of A. de Vogue and J. Neufville. They prepared for it by publishing seven years ago the first critical edition of the Rule of the Master ( SC 105-107). In the first three volumes, the editors methodically compare Benoit's work with that of the Rule of the Master and the historical evidence concerning it. ith a 50 page introduction, extensive footnotes throughout, analytic table and multiple indices.
