Añadir al carritoSoft cover. Condición: Fine. Breviarium Romanum — Complete Four-Volume Set, Desclée & Socii, Rome-Tournai-Paris A beautifully complete set of the Roman Breviary in four volumes — Pars Verna (Spring), Pars Æstiva (Summer), Pars Autumnalis (Autumn), and Pars Hiemalis (Winter) — published by Desclée & Socii, printers to the Holy Se…e and the Sacred Congregation of Rites. This is the editio juxta typicam amplificata, restored per the Council of Trent under St. Pius V and reformed under Pius X — the standard pre-conciliar Latin breviary used by priests and religious for the daily Divine Office. What makes this set special: Uniform binding across all four volumes — supple black leather with gilt-lettered spines reading "Breviarium Romanum" and the season name (Verna, Æstiva, Autumnalis, Hiemalis), raised bands, and beautifully burnished gilt page edges that still glow gold. A rainbow of silk ribbon markers — each volume is fitted with multiple colored grosgrain ribbons (green, blue, purple, orange, red), a hallmark of a breviary that was seriously and lovingly used for daily prayer, letting the reader navigate psalms, propers, and commons at a glance. Honest, characterful wear — softened corners, a touch of spine rubbing, and the gentle bow of covers that comes from decades of being opened, carried, and prayed from. This is not a shelf ornament; it's a book that did its job. Complete set — all four seasonal volumes present and matching, which is increasingly hard to find intact as sets get broken up and sold off individually. A note for the discerning collector: the text block includes the office for St. Pius X as Confessor — worth double-checking against the exact print date, since his canonization came later in the 20th century; a quick look at the colophon/imprimatur page will confirm the precise year of this printing. Whether for liturgical use, as a devotional heirloom, or as a striking addition to a collection of ecclesiastical printing, this set offers the tactile richness of old-world bookmaking — hand-tooled leather, gilt edges, and ribbon markers in a full rainbow — paired with the gravity of a text that shaped centuries of daily prayer.

Añadir al carritoSmall folio. ½ p. on bifolium. With autograph address. Mounted in papered frame (357 x 246 mm). In Italian. Rare letter to King Charles IX of France, referring to a previous audience of Charles's ambassador to the Holy See, Charles d'Angennes de Rambouillet, archbishop of Mans. The topic of the long audience had been the "preser…vation" of unspecified help that the Pope "willingly brought to the King", most likely reinforcements to the Catholic army in the French Wars of Religion. Pius announces that d'Angennes will write the King in detail and that his nuncio in France will ask for an audience with Charles. The letter in full: "Carissimo in Christo fili salutem et Apostolicum benedictionem. - The French Wars of Religion had flared up again in 1568 with the Third Civil War, which lasted until 1570. Just a few weeks before the audience of the ambassador with the Pope, Charles's Catholic army, supported by troops from Spain and the Papal State, were defeated in the Battle of La Roche-l'Abeille on 25 June 1569. On 3 October 1569, the Catholic forces won the Battle of Montcour but Charles, on the verge of bankruptcy, would still be forced to sign the Peace of Saint-Germain-en-Laye on 8 August 1570 that guaranteed specific rights and responsibilities to the French Huguenots. Two years later, Charles gained lasting notoriety for his ambiguous role in the St Bartholomew's Day massacre against the Huguenots that violently ended the fragile religious peace. - Traces of folds and seal. With added date "2 aoust 1569" in French to the address (twice). Some browning and minor stains. Several tears to the paper border.

Añadir al carritoNo Binding. Condición: Very Good. A HIGHLY INTERESTING AND VERY RARE PAPAL DECREE IN THE VERNACULAR ON ROMAN PRISON REGULATIONS, ADDRESSING CORRUPTION AND EXTORTION PREVALENT AMONG WARDENS AND CAPTAINS, AND PRISONERS' RIGHTS. With law and its application greatly differing throughout Italian states and provinces at the time, this… bull provides rare contemporary insight into corruption within the judicial system, specifically the extortion of secret payments through prison wardens and their superiors, and gives official guidelines to both wardens and prisoners. Accounts are to be kept, noting prisoner s meals. There are details on quantity and quality of food ( buon pane e buon vino a bastanza, & almeno una libra di carne al giorno con la minestra ). Contraventions from the side of the wardens and captains are to be fined. Prisoners wants are to be reported to the captains through the wardens. Prisoners payments, any other objects including arms, are to be kept in a strongbox, with one key held by a captain, the other by his superior. Further sections discuss compensations due to mistreatment and beatings, the explicit prohibition of Executors or prison chiefs to make inventories of a delinquent s possessions without specific instruction, the treatment of the poor, extortion of payments from prostitutes, etc. Pope Saint Pius V (17 January 1504 1 May 1572) was Pope from January 1566 until his death in 1572. He is chiefly notable for his role in the Council of Trent, the Counter Reformation, and the standardization of the Roman Rite within the Latin Church. Pius V was under constant pressure during the time of the passing of this decree. Following the recent first Diet of Augsburg and with the renewal of the war against the Turks, Emperor Maximilian was asking for financial assistance, Malta required aid following the Great Siege of 1565, and the beleaguered Mary, Queen of Scots equally required support. Printed by Blado, the decree is signed v. vitellius card. camerarius , one of the signatories of the bull concerning the confirmation of the Council of Trent. Catalogo delle edizioni romane di Antonio Blado, I, 422; not found in OCLC. Signed by Author(s).
