Includes Introduction; Part One, The Promise of Something Better; and Part Two, The Momentous Issue of Civil War. Also includes What Became of.?; Acknowledgments, Notes, and Index. A chronicle of the four months between Lincoln's election and inauguration evaluates the period decisions he made regarding slavery, secession, and the possibility of a Civil War, in an account that also offers insight into the selections of his cabinet members. Abraham Lincoln first demonstrated his determination and leadership in the Great Secession Winter--the months between his election in November 1860 and his inauguration in March 1861--when he rejected compromises urged on him by Republicans and Democrats, Northerners and Southerners, that might have preserved the Union a little longer, but would have enshrined slavery for generations. Though Lincoln has been criticized by many historians for failing to appreciate the severity of the secession crisis that greeted his victory, Holzer shows that the president-elect waged a shrewd and complex campaign to prevent the expansion of slavery while trying to limit secession to a few Deep South states. Through limited, brilliantly timed and crafted public statements, determined private letters, tough political pressure, and personal persuasion, Lincoln guaranteed the integrity of the American political process of majority rule, sounded the death knell of slavery, and transformed not only his own image but that of the presidency, even while making inevitable the war that would be necessary to make these achievements permanent. Derived from a Kirkus review: Award-winning Lincoln scholar Holzer meticulously examines the ominous period between the 16th president's election and his swearing in. In 1860 a constitutional provision prevented Lincoln from taking the presidential oath until March, some four months after he won the office. This dangerously long interregnum-which Henry Adams called "The Great Secession Winter"-unfortunately coincided with the single greatest crisis in the nation's history: the secession of southern states from the union. While the incumbent James Buchanan dithered, Lincoln, without legal authority, maneuvered behind the scenes to stiffen his own supporters, assiduously avoiding needless offense to the South. From borrowed capitol offices in his hometown of Springfield, Ill., he faced the delicate political task of assembling his cabinet; answered torrents of mail from and met with hundreds of critics, well-wishers and office-seekers; sat for artists and photographers and began growing his iconic beard; worked on the most important speech of his life, his inaugural address; and contacted hundreds of opinion-makers, party leaders and members of Congress, attempting to contain the crisis. With a month to go before inauguration, he delivered his touching farewell address to his neighbors and set off on a 13-day trip to Washington. Relying on recollections by Lincoln's contemporaries, newspaper and magazine accounts, Holzer turns in a learned chronicle of a massively significant few months. Effectively brings this tense interlude to vivid life. First Simon & Schuster Hardcover Edition [Stated]. First printing [stated].

Illustrations. Notes. Bibliography. Index. Harold Holzer (born February 5, 1949) is a scholar of Abraham Lincoln and the political culture of the American Civil War Era. He serves as director of Hunter College's Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute. Holzer previously spent twenty-three years as senior vice president for public affairs at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York before retiring in 2015. Holzer began his career as a newspaper reporter and then editor of The Manhattan Tribune. He then served as press secretary to Congresswoman Bella S. Abzug, press secretary to 1977 mayoral candidate Mario Cuomo, a government speechwriter for New York City Mayor Abraham D. Beame, and for six years as public affairs director for WNET. From 1984 through 1992 Holzer worked in the administration of Governor Mario Cuomo (with whom he co-edited the 1990 book, Lincoln on Democracy). In 1992, Holzer joined The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York as chief communications officer. He was elevated to vice president in 1996 and senior vice president for public affairs in 2005 with responsibilities over government affairs, multi-cultural development, admissions, and visitor services. In his work as a historian Holzer has authored, co-authored, and edited more than 52 books, and contributed more than 550 articles, plus chapters and forewords for 60 additional books. Many of his works have received awards, including the Gilder Lehrman Lincoln Prize and four other awards in 2015 for his book Lincoln and the Power of the Press. Winner of the Gilder Lehrman Lincoln Prize. Lincoln believed that "with public sentiment nothing can fail; without it, nothing can succeed." Harold Holzer makes a significant contribution to our understanding of Lincoln's leadership by showing us how deftly he managed his relations with the press of his day to move public opinion forward to preserve the Union and abolish slavery. --Doris Kearns Goodwin. From his earliest days, Lincoln devoured newspapers. As he started out in politics he wrote editorials and letters to argue his case. He spoke to the public directly through the press. He even bought a German-language newspaper to appeal to that growing electorate in his state. Lincoln alternately pampered, battled, and manipulated the three most powerful publishers of the day: Horace Greeley of the New York Tribune, James Gordon Bennett of the New York Herald, and Henry Raymond of the New York Times. When war broke out and the nation was tearing itself apart, Lincoln authorized the most widespread censorship in the nation's history, closing down papers that were disloyal and even jailing or exiling editors who opposed enlistment or sympathized with secession. The telegraph, the new invention that made instant reporting possible, was moved to the office of Secretary of War Stanton to deny it to unfriendly newsmen. Holzer shows us an activist Lincoln through journalists who covered him from his start through to the night of his assassination, when one reporter ran to the box where Lincoln was shot and emerged to write the story covered with blood. In a wholly original way, Holzer shows us politicized newspaper editors battling for power, and a masterly president using the press to speak directly to the people and shape the nation. In 2008, Holzer received the National Humanities Medal from President Bush and The Lincoln Medal of Honor from the Lincoln Society of Springfield, Illinois, the state's highest honor. Norton Garfinkle (born February 26, 1931) is an American economist, writer, and businessman. He is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate with honors from Columbia University and did graduate work at Columbia University and Princeton University. He taught economics and economic history at Amherst College, and was an editor the Journal of Economic History. Garfinkle is Chairman of the Future of American Democracy Foundation, a nonprofit, nonpartisan foundation in partnership with Yale University Press and the Yale Center for International and Area Studies, "dedicated to research and education aimed at renewing and sustaining the historic vision of American democracy". In A Just and Generous Nation, the eminent historian Harold Holzer and the noted economist Norton Garfinkle present a groundbreaking new account of the beliefs that inspired our sixteenth president to go to war when the Southern states seceded from the Union. Rather than a commitment to eradicating slavery or a defense of the Union, they argue, Lincoln's guiding principle was the defense of equal economic opportunity. Lincoln firmly believed that the government's primary role was to ensure that all Americans had the opportunity to better their station in life. As president, he worked tirelessly to enshrine this ideal within the federal government. He funded railroads and canals, supported education, and, most importantly, issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which opened the door for former slaves to join white Americans in striving for self-improvement. In our own age of unprecedented inequality, A Just and Generous Nation reestablishes Lincoln's legacy as the protector not just of personal freedom but of the American dream itself. Derived from a Kirkus review: The acclaimed Lincoln scholar and an economist make the argument that Abraham Lincoln worked tirelessly to maintain economic opportunity for all peoplea "right to rise" concept that has been sacred to politicians from then to the present. Lincoln wasn't exactly an abolitionist, write Holzer (Lincoln and the Power of the Press, 2014, etc.) and Garfinkle (Future of American Democracy Foundation), but he envisioned that all Americans could embrace the "American dream," from rags to riches as he hadeven African-Americans. The authors concentrate their study on evidence of speeches and acts of Lincoln's presidency that demonstrated his pursuit of "economic opportunity for the widest possible circle of hardworking Americans." Lincoln hoped to extend Northern middle-class society into the new territories, and he abhorred the Southern aristocratic mindset that was opposed to social mobility through tariffs and internal improvementse.g., public investment in infrastructure. New Western territories were, for Lincoln, meant for poor whites to "go and better their condition" and not for the spread of an institution, though protected by the Constitution, that restricted social mobility and depressed wages. The authors carefully sift Lincoln's speeches, beginning in 1854 with his shrewd political calculation that restricting slavery in the Western territories would mean that at some point in the near future, the "slow but sure arrival of an ever-growing western anti-slavery bloc" would spell the end of slavery in Congress. Time was on Lincoln's side, and he recognized that the nation "will become all one thing or all the other." Moreover, he used his own autobiography to sell the "self-made man" story, as the poor farmer's son who had scant education but huge motivation to better himself. In the second half of this compelling study, Holzer and Garfinkle trace how subsequent presidents managed this vastly changing postwar economic system and the shift from independent artisans to mills and factories. A well-honed work of driving focus, particularly timely in this new era of economic inequality.
