YISROEL SHTEYNBOYM (ISRAEL STEINBAUM) (April 15, 1895 Stashev (Staszów), Poland - June 19, 1979 Miami, Florida) was an educator and the author of textbooks. His early education was in religious schools. He came to the United States and took up a variety of trades. He studied at Boston College and at the Teachers' College of Columbia University. From 1914 he was a teacher in the Jewish National Labor Alliance, the Workmen's Circle, and later the Sholem-Aleichem Folkshul. He was one of the founders of the Jewish teachers' seminary in New York as well as one of the pioneers of the modern Jewish school in America. In 1926 he became director of the Jewish children's colony in New Jersey, and there he later established, and ran until 1945, the first private Jewish "Home School" in America. In the years 1955-1970, he was secretary of the committee to publish Der groyser yidisher verterbukh (The great Yiddish dictionary) (New York, 1961-). He settled in Miami in 1970. He debuted in print with an article in Idisher kemfer (Jewish fighter) in New York. He went on to contribute to: Yivo-bleter (Pages from YIVO), Yidishe shprakh (Yiddish language), Shriftn (Writings), Kultur un dertsiung (Culture and education), Di naye velt (The new world), Idishe sotsyalistishe monatshrift (Jewish socialist monthly writing), Di feder (The pen), Ertsiung (Education), and Shul un lerer (School and teacher), among others. He mostly wrote about educational matters and reviews of textbooks and children's literature. He co-edited and later himself edited the journal if the Workmen's Circle, Kinderland (Children's land). His books include: Shpilbukh far kleyn un groys (Playbook for children and adults) (New York: Workmen's Circle, 1921), 128 pp.; Leyenbikher far der idisher shul (Textbooks for the Jewish school) (New York: Maks N. Eliza Orzeszkowa (June 6, 1841 - May 18, 1910), was a Polish novelist and a leading writer of the Positivism in Poland during foreign Partitions. She was born to a noble Pawlowski family in Milkowszczyzna, and died in Grodno (now Hrodna, Belarus) nearby. At the age of sixteen, Eliza married Piotr Orzeszko, a Polish nobleman twice her own age, who was exiled to Siberia after the January Uprising of 1863. They were legally separated in 1869. She married again in 1894, after a 30-year-long loving relationship with Stanislaw Nahorski who died a few years later. At age 12 he was transferred to Teheran and reached Eretz Israel in February 1943 in the "Teheran Children Immigration." At age 16 he published his first poem in Hebrew. h was one of the founders of Kibbutz Revadim, was in the Palmach in Gush Etzion, was captured by the Jordanian Legion in May 1948. After his release he studied literature and philosophy at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He published various books of poetry, was Israel's cultural attached in Brazil, Yigal Alon's advisor, was involved in the theatre in Israel, translated from the Russian and was very prolific in his literary output. The illustrated monthly, Altneuland (same name as Herzl's book) deals with matters relating to Eretz Israel and was intended to familiarize Jews in Poland with Jewish Lif…e in Israel. It started as a monthly in 1919, became a bi-weekly, and ceased publication in 1925. Avraham Itzhak Triwaks was a journalist, Hebrew and Yiddish author, publisher and book distributor in Warsaw and Israel. At age 9 he and his family immigrated to Eretz Israel, where as an adult he served as the correspondent in Eretz Israel for the Warsaw daily Unser Leben. He traveled to Russia in 1910, lived for a while in the city Rovno (Rowne in Polish, now known as Rivne) in Wolyn in western Ukraine. He then settled in Warsaw, was a member of the administration of the dailies Haint and Dos Yidishe Folk, and he published hundreds of articles about Eretz Israel in the Di Yidish Vokh and the Hebrew newspaper Hatzfira. He traveled through cities in Poland and the Ukraine to organize the distribution of Yiddish and Hebrew works by the publisher Central Merkaz that was founded in 1911. In 1916 while in Warsaw that was under German occupation (WWI), he published a Yiddish German dictionary as an aid to the Jewish population, but only the Yiddish to German volume was published. In 1917 he began to publish a pocket dictionary in Yiddish of which the first 4 volumes were published. He settled permanently in Eretz Israel in 1924. His literary and publishing activities deserve a book in and of itself.

The illustrated monthly, Altneuland (same nam…e as Herzl's book) deals with matters relating to Eretz Israel and was intended to familiarize Jews in Poland with Jewish Life in Israel. It started as a monthly in 1919, became a bi-weekly, and ceased publication in 1925. Avraham Itzhak Triwaks was a journalist, Hebrew and Yiddish author, publisher and book distributor in Warsaw and Israel. At age 9 he and his family immigrated to Eretz Israel, where as an adult he served as the correspondent in Eretz Israel for the Warsaw daily Unser Leben. He traveled to Russia in 1910, lived for a while in the city Rovno (Rowne in Polish, now known as Rivne) in Wolyn in western Ukraine. He then settled in Warsaw, was a member of the administration of the dailies Haint and Dos Yidishe Folk, and he published hundreds of articles about Eretz Israel in the Di Yidish Vokh and the Hebrew newspaper Hatzfira. He traveled through cities in Poland and the Ukraine to organize the distribution of Yiddish and Hebrew works by the publisher Central Merkaz that was founded in 1911. In 1916 while in Warsaw that was under German occupation (WWI), he published a Yiddish German dictionary as an aid to the Jewish population, but only the Yiddish to German volume was published. In 1917 he began to publish a pocket dictionary in Yiddish of which the first 4 volumes were published. He settled permanently in Eretz Israel in 1924. His literary and publishing activities deserve a book in and of itself.
