THE MILLER AND HIS MEN a Melodrama in two acts printed from the acting copy, with remarks biographical and critical by D--G. ; to which are added a description of the costume, cast of the characters, entrances and exits, relative positions of the performers on the stage, and the whole of the stage business as performed at the Theatres Royal, London ; embellished with a fine engraving by Mr. Bonner from a drawing taken in the theatre by R. Cruikshank. By Isaac Pocock (1782-1835) Published in London by John Cumberland (1830) Undated, the British Library gives a date of circa 1830 on this stage play by Isaac Pocock The Miller and His Men is a popular 19th-century melodrama by English dramatist Isaac Pocock. First performed at the Covent Garden theatre in 1813, the play is known for its dramatic plot, musical score, and iconic mill explosion climax. The story follows the virtuous hero, Lothair, who seeks to bring a band of robbers to justice. To do so, he must expose the rich but villainous miller, Grindoff, who is secretly the leader of the bandits. Act I The play is set in a forested area of Bohemia, where a band of robbers, or "banditti," is terrorizing the locals. The plot begins when Lothair and his friend, Count Friberg, encounter the beautiful Claudine, the daughter of the old cottager Kelmar. Claudine is in love with Lothair, but her father, influenced by the wealthy Miller Grindoff, prefers that she marry Grindoff instead. The audience learns that the mill is not what it seems. During a musical number, the "merry millers" sing a round as they enter the mill, but it is soon revealed that they are actually the bandits, led by the wicked Grindoff. Lothair witnesses the bandits in action and deduces their true identity. He decides to expose Grindoff and his gang to win Claudine's hand and bring justice to the region Act II Grindoff, enraged by Claudine's rejection and Lothair's interference, captures Lothair and Claudine and imprisons them in the mill. The bandits, after stealing a rich prize, celebrate in their lair, unaware that they are about to be exposed. The plot reaches its climax when Grindoff's jealous mistress, Ravina, decides to betray him. Ravina finds Lothair and Claudine trapped in the mill and helps them escape. After Lothair and Claudine are safely away, Ravina sets a fuse to the mill, triggering a spectacular explosion that destroys the mill and kills Grindoff and his men. The heroes are rescued, the villains meet a dramatic end, and Lothair and Claudine are free to be together, concluding the melodrama with a classic triumph of good over evil. Undated, but published circa 1830, this is an early printing of this stage play. Illustrated with a frontispiece and running to 48 pages, 14cm tall approx. the book is disbound with no covers. CONDITION As mentioned, the book is disbound with no covers, foxing marks on and off else in good general condition. Book would benefit from rebinding, else a good example of this scarce early theatre adaptation. This is a lighter item, overseas shipping costs will be reduced at checkout where possible.
