Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. Philosopher Terry Pinkard revisits Sartres later work, illuminating a pivotal stance in Sartres understanding of freedom and communal action. Jean-Paul Sartres Critique of Dialectical Reason, released to great fanfare in 1960, has since then receded in philosophical visibility. However, as Sartres reputation is now making a comeback, it is time for a reappraisal of his later work. In Practice, Power, and Forms of Life, philosopher Terry Pinkard interprets Sartres late work as a fundamental reworking of his earlier work, especially in terms of his understanding of the possibility of communal action as genuinely free, which the French philosopher had previously argued was impossible. Pinkard reveals how Sartre was drawn back to Hegel, a move, that was itself incited by Sartres newfound interest in Marxism. Pinkard argues that Sartre constructed a novel position on freedom that has yet to be adequately taken up and analyzed within philosophy and political theory. Through Sartre, Pinkard advances an argument that contributes to the history of philosophy as well as contemporary and future debates on action and freedom. One of the founders of modern philosophical thought Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (1770-1831) has gained the reputation of being one of the most abstruse & impenetrable of thinkers. Terry Pinkard situates Hegel firmly in the historical context of his times. The story of that life is of an ambitious, powerful thinker living in a period of great tumult dominated by the figure of Napolean. Pinkard explores Hegel's interactions with some of the great minds of this period: Hölderlin, Goethe, Humboldt, Schelling, Novalis, the Schlegels, Mendelssohn, and others. Throughout, he avoids Hegel's own famously technical jargon in order to display the full sweep and power of Hegel's thought. The Hegel who emerges from this account is a complex, fascinating figure of European modernity, who offers us a still compelling examination of that new world born out of the political, industrial, social, & scientific revolutions of his period. * HIGHEST PRAISE: ". . . this is the most rounded & reliable life of Hegel there has ever been." -London Review of Books. "Terry Pinkard's biography is of the first rank." -George Steiner in The Observer * ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Terry Pinkard is professor of Philosophy at Northwestern University and is author/ editor of many books, including "Hegel's Phenomenology" (Cambridge, 1996). He is honorary Professor of the Philosophy Faculty of TÜbingen University, Germany and serves on the advisory board for the Zeitschrift fÜr Philosophique Forschung. * SHIPPING: MNEMOSYNE carefully wraps, labels & custom-packages this fine book for FREE domestic shipment via USPS MEDIA MAIL (or USPS PRIORITY MAIL for a below-cost additional fee) & via USPS FIRST CLASS INTERNATIONAL AIRMAIL to international destinations at our posted rates.
