Hardcover. Probably ca 1830s. Original quarter black leather (spine) and cloth, approximately 3 1/2 x 6 inches, 465 pp, illustrated title page drawn by "Morse" (Samuel? ) and engraved by "Dick" (Alexander? ) + frontispiece. Hardcover, good to very good. Corners bumped with cardboard exposed there and along edges of boards, cloth completely removed from rear board, spine scuffed along joints and at head and foot. Internally, previous owner's signature, "L. H. Lincoln, Bath Aug 26, 1839", and an interesting Civil War tie-in on reverse side of illustrated title page, "Hospital 31 Regiment N. Y. Vol. " (31st Regiment New York Volunteers) , free rear endpapers removed, foxed throughout, side edges of a half dozen or so adjoining leaves creased, otherwise tight, clean, paper crisp, unmarked and apparently never read. A common book, but a rather uncommon artifact of American history. Religion; Christian; Christianity; piety.

Hardcover. Condición: Good. 1st Edition. JONES, Rev J. P. [John Pike] (1790-1857); KINGSTON, J. F. (Dates Unknown); MANSEL-PLEYDELL, John Clavell (1817-1902) [Ex-Libris]. Flora Devoniensis: Or A Descriptive Catalogue Of Plants Growing Wild In The County Of Devon, Arranged Both According The Linnaean And Natural Systems, With An Account Of Their Geographical Distribution, &c. London: Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, And Green 1829. 1st Edition. 8vo (222x148mm), xlvii, 217 [1]. Good. Original polished half brown calf binding with marbled paper boards and banded spine. Gold gilt accents on the edges of the calf on the boards; gold gilt decoration and lettering on the spine. Red and black dyed calf on the spine. Marbled endpages and edges in the same style as the boards. This copy is in good condition, with some cosmetic damage to the boards including a tear to the front, knocks and bumps to the corners. Rubbing at the joins of the spine and on the spine banding in particular. Some tears and marks on the calf on the rear board. However, these issues are all cosmetic and the binding of the book is in superb condition for a book of this age. The textblock is tight and square and feels remarkably stable. Internally it is generally clean with very minimal signs of foxing. There are some small bumps to some page corners, but otherwise the pages are in excellent condition. Pencil marks from a previous owner are found throughout. There is an ex-libris sticker from 'J.C.Mansel-Pleydell' on the front pastedown. On publication of this work in 1829 this was the first comprehensive record of the flora of the county of Devon, including Small Hare's Ear, White Rockrose and Goldilocks Aster. This copy contains an Ex-Libris sticker from Dorset polymath John Clavell Mansel-Pleydell who had a keen interest in botany and was a Fellow of both the Geological and Linnaean Societies. Mansel-Pleydell was a well established figure in Dorset, he was was one of the promoters of the Somerset and Dorset Railway and founded the Dorset Natural History and Antiquarian Field Club. Perhaps in an attempt to echo the work of Jones & Kingston, he published "The Flora of Dorsetshire" in 1874.

Hard Back. Condición: Very Good. viii + 216 pages. Undated, but BL date their copy to c1830. Condition: Decorative blind-stamped binding with gilt to spine design & title, all in very good condition, just very minor wear to edges. Contents Very good, clean & tight with gilt edges, inside front cover " John Hackney, Holbeach 1852". From research BL date their own copy to c1830, but very difficult to be 100% sure or an exact date as it is known this publisher not only did not always put a publication date, but when they reprinted, did not always put a date or edition either. Inscriptions are only a rough guide as it is known some bookshops kept books for well over 30 years if not sold, and John Hackney may not be the 1st owner. All we can be sure of, it is not later than 1852. I have seen listing mentioning an illustrated frontispiece, this copy does not have one and never had one, as very tight between endpage and title page with no room between. Size: 7 x 11cm Approx.

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. First Edition (?). Blue cloth with gilt titles and decoration. This copy has some moderate corner wear but is otherwise bright and attractive with some light interior aging. A name and date (E. Coolidge, 1874) are barely visible on the black endpapers. Book is square and binding secure. VG. This is, I think, the first edition of the book on the Fisk Jubilee Singers first tour in Great Britain. The Jubilee Singers were formed in 1871 and travelled in the US to raise money for Fisk. In 1873, they travelled to Great Britain where they sang for, among many others, the Royal Family. This is the Hodder and Stoughton edition from 1874 which appears to precede the American Edition which has an 1875 date. WorldCat locates fewer than 20 copies of this edition. I find none in the trade. LAFISK ; B&W Frontispiece; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 202 pages; Sold FABA 3.1.24 BTC.
