Des études ont été également consacrées aux troubles de la personnalité et aux conduites pathologiques suscités ou aggravés par les atteintes portées à cette identité culturelle depuis quelques générations, en particulier dans sa composante linguistique. Aujourd'hui c'est un nouvel aspect de la question qu'abordent les membres de la Société Bretonne d'Ethno-Psychiatrie (créée en 1976) en collaboration avec l'Institut Culturel de Bretagne. Le présent ouvrage est consacré à l'enfant breton, un sujet qui a été jusqu'ici encore assez peu exploré. La première partie de l'ouvrage constitue la synthèse d'un travail de recherche mené de 1983 à 1986 par le docteur Philippe Carrer et M. Gwenaël Le Béchennec sur les images du père et de la mère à partir du dessin de famille. Cette recherche met en lumière un fait remarquable : en Bretagne, chez l'enfant de 10 à 11 ans, l'image de la mère est plus valorisée que dans d'autres régions et l'image du père apparaît moins présente. La seconde partie réunit quatre contributions présentées lors de la VIIe Journée d'Études Ethno-Psychiatriques tenue à Quimper en 1985 sur le thème de l'enfant breton par les docteurs Didier Houzel et Claude Vedeilhie et Mmes Patricia Violette et Nicole Meyer-Vray. L'ouvrage est préfacé par le docteur Gérard Mendel, pionnier de la sociopsychanalyse, dont les travaux sur l'enfance et la jeunesse sont internationalement connus, notamment : La Révolte contre le père (1968), La Crise des générations (1969), Pour décoloniser l'enfant (1971), Le Manifeste éducatif (1973) et 54 millions d'individus sans appartenance (1983).
