Hardcover. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st ed. 1st printing ; 2 vols. xvi, 400, 354 pages : illustrations, maps 24 cm ; ISBN 9781782891277, 1782891277 ; blue cloth, no dustjackets or slipcase ; "This memoir with diary excerpts is a concise record of General Pershing's experiences in his role in WWI, providing insight into the war told from the American perspective. It tells of his early life as a soldier, and events leading up to this war while the world sleepwalked its way into a catastrophe of indescribable proportions. No doubt, Pershing's insights after this war helped shape the thinking of future American generals." ; The Pulitzer prize has been the sought after goal of many thousands of writers ever since it was first awarded in 1917. In 1932, the Pulitzer in the history category was awarded to General John "Black Jack" Pershing for his two volume memoirs spanning his time in command of the American Forces in World War One. Given that Pershing should receive such an illustrious prize in the literary arena outside of his army career was a just testament to his multi-faceted and outstanding talents. As the First World War raged into its fourth year, the lifeblood of the Allied forces on the Western Front laid spilt on the fields of Northern France and Flanders. Their only hope in facing the German onslaught lay in the newly mobilized American forces, who had joined the struggle against the central powers in Germany and Austro-Hungary. It would take a commander of towering strength, firm loyalty, and iron determination to change the small American peacetime army into the millions strong wartime colossus it was to become. Such a man was John "Black Jack" Pershing.AS he took command, Pershing was faced with four almightily difficult challenges to overcome in order to achieve success; the first to turn the raw American Doughboys into an army, trained in the new tactics of the industrial carnage of the Western Front. Secondly, to ship enough men, and supplies across the U-boat infested Atlantic to create such an army. Thirdly, to keep his allies hands off American manpower that became trained and ready for battle, they should fight under American flags and American leaders. It was only once the first three huge challenges were overcome could he think about his fourth, how his new troops could fight and beat the battle-hardened German army: but fight and beat them they did!A Pulitzer Prize winning classic in the 1st edition ; FINE/FINE. What Eisenhower was to World War Two this U.S. Army general better known as "Black Jack" was to World War One as commander of the American Expeditionary Forces (1917-20) -- he actually mentored all the head honchos of WW2, including Ike, Bradley, Marshall, MacArthur, Patton and others; in 1921 he was named Chief of Staff of the United States Army, where he remained until retirement in 1924. TNS, 1p (lettersheet), 7" X 9", Washington, DC, 5 January 1923. Addressed to Honorable John Barrett (1866-1938, a Western journalist turned diplomat who served as U.S. minister to Siam, Argentina, Panama and Colombia before a 14-year stint as director-general of the Pan-American Union). Very good. Minor wrinkles. On "General of the Armies" imprinted letterhead (a rank he was the first to achieve), Pershing sends "my warm personal thanks for your Christmas and New Year's Greetings. The sentiments expressed are highly appreciated and I assure you cordially reciprocated." Boldly signed in full. Accompanied by a superb 7" X 9" head-and-shoulders sepia-tone portrait (Clinedinst Studio of Washington, DC) in uniform bearing facsimile signature. Very good. Mildly age toned.…
