Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. "It's the finish that sells the goods". Fabrics as they leave the loom or knitting machine are in a crude state and need considerable processing to enhance their aesthetics and performance to make them merchantable: attractive, useful and at the right price. The key factors for fabrics used in clothing are: width, stability, handle, drape, lustre, resistance to various things (e.g.mould) and eye appeal. The early refinement processes include purification (scouring, bleaching) and colouring (dyeing and printing), both of which were well understood areas of chemistry. Bean acknowledges McCleary's contribution to Part I of the book which deals with these. The next stage is FINISHING, which Bean describes as being more about physical skills and mechanical manipulation than drugs and chemicals. There can be more than one way of achieving the effect desired by the customer so that finishing is as much an art as a science. In Part II, Practical Finishing, he first details the active or inert compounds contained in 7 broad areas of effect in finishing. (e.g. stiffeners, fillers, softeners). He then describes 16 types of machine processing (e.g. calendering, stentering, chintzing, raising, cropping) with illustrations of the machines involved. Bean acknowledges the machinery manufacturers who provided plates. In Part III he gives detailed instructions on how to produce the 45 Finished Patterns (13 white, 23 dyed, 9 printed) which are all present as called for. Title and Preface (i-vi), Contents (vii-xvi), Lists of 38 Diagrams and 37 Illustrations (xvii-xix), List of 18 Plates (xx), 564pp text, Appendix and Addendum (i-viii), Index (ix-xvii), Advertisements (i-vi). p.445, List of the 45 Finished Patterns. Original binding: green cloth on board. Indented line pattern round front and back covers. Gilt title, authors and publisher on spine. Slight browning throughout, otherwise a VERY GOOD copy. The book weighs 1.8 kg (4 lbs). Postage quotation on request. Size: 9 x 6.
