Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: New. Estado de la sobrecubierta: None. Illustrated. Illus. cloth, no dj. (as issued). New Copy. A reissue of a cult design book about Nova, the groundbreaking British magazine of the 60s and 70s, with a new introduction. Nova 1965â"1975 celebrates one of the most influential magazines in history. Known as âthe thinking womanâs magazineâ Nova was a British publication that set itself apart from its contemporaries by creating a magazine that was not just about fashion but was also politically, socially and sexually aware. The magazine covered issues that were controversial at the time, such as abortion, racism, gay rights and The Pill, and featured writers such as Susan Sontag, Harold Pinter, Elizabeth David, Prue Leith, William Trevor, Christopher Booker and Graham Greene. The book is compiled by David Hillman and Harri Peccinotti, who worked as Art Directors on the magazine. The design and layout of the magazine were as groundbreaking as the content, and borrowed ideas from the psychedelic subculture and underground press of the day. Nova was one of the first magazines to include black models in their photoshoots, and regular photographers for the magazine included Helmut Newton, Guy Bourdin, Terence Donovan, Don McCullin, Bob Richards and Diane Arbus. The book selects the best covers and articles from the magazineâs decade-long output and looks at them in detail, featuring many of the iconic magazine covers.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. Harry Peccinotti (photographs) / Oscar Epfs (End-papers) Ilustrador. 1st Edition. "Caesar's Vast Ghost, Aspects of Provence" is a truly lovely book wherein we are guided through the historical beauty of Provence by Lawrence Durrell, a man who has lived in Provence for thirty years. Gracing Durrell's genial narration are the beautiful color photographs of Harry Peccinotti. Also included are nineteen poems by Durrell. From the dust-jacket write-up : "For more than thirty years the world-famous writer Lawrence Durrell has lived in Provence, that magical wedge of land in southern France that has been the scene of so much rich and varied history. Julius Caesar gave Provence its name and built his fleet for the Egyptian campaign there - at Arles, which was then a coastal city. Earlier, the Roman general Marius, whom history has sorely neglected, brilliantly defeated a vast horde of Nordic barbarians there, thus saving Rome from almost certain destruction. Long before the Romans discovered Provence, the Phoenicians and Greeks had preceded them. But these earlier settlers were essentially seagoing people, and it was the Romans who left their indelible mark, magnificent vestiges of which remain today: arenas and theaters, arches and bridges, road systems and aqueducts. Caesar's vast ghost still haunts the tourist playgrounds of today. "Durrell clearly loves Provence and savors it as perhaps only an adopted son can. His is not a guidebook, though readers will find here information and countless intriguing morsels unavailable in any tourist handbook. Nor is it a writer's journal, though it preserves memories and cameos from the author's intimate knowledge of the place and people. It is, rather, a letter to posterity, capturing the essential spirit of this ancient, enchanting land, watered by a great river, and the extraordinary array of warriors, historians, philosophers, troubadours, popes, and poets who constitute its human history through the centuries. Durrell was a long-time close friend of Henry Miller, and the two of them influenced each others' work. Quarto, blue cloth with gold lettering on spine; illustrated with several gorgeous glossy color photos of Provence by Harry Peccinotti; archival mylar-protected photographic dust jacket (unclipped: $35), Index, flamboyant pictorial endpapers; xiv + 210 pages. Lawrence Durrell (1912 - 1990) was an expatriate British novelist, poet, dramatist, and travel writer. Born in India to colonial parents, he was sent to England at the age of eleven for his education. His first book was published in 1935, when he was 23. In March,1935, he and his wife, and his mother and younger siblings, moved to the island of Corfu. Durrell spent many years afterward living around the world, to include Paris, France--associating closely with Henry Miller and Anais Nin; then Alexandria, Egypt and Rhodes; Cordoba, Spain, and Belgrade; and elsewhere. During the late 1930's, Faber and Faber offered to publish Durrell's THE BLACK BOOK in an expurgated edition, but on the advice of author Henry Miller, Durrell declined. It was then published by Obelisk Press in Paris along with Henry Miller's, Max and the White Phagocytes and Anaïs Nin's, Winter of Artifice. Although THE BLACK BOOK was published in 1938, Durrell had written the novel over a 16-month period from September 1935 until December 1936. The novel shows several surrealist influences in part related to the 1936 London International Surrealist Exhibition, about which Henry Miller forwarded Durrell materials from Herbert Read. The initial publication had to be in Paris because THE BLACK BOOK's explicit sexual content prohibited publication in England. It was published in the US in 1960, but not published in Great Britain by Faber & Faber until 1973, following the successful courtroom defense of D. H. Lawrence's Lady Chatterley's Lover. Durrell's most famous work is probably The Alexandria Quartet, a tetralogy published between 1957 and 1960. SUPERIOR CONDITION internally and externally (with slight rubbing to the extremities of the dust jacket).
