Libro
Hardcover. Condición: Fair. No Jacket. 414 pages. [Volume 2] was published in 1941. This is sound but less than perfect copy, of interest as much for its provenance as for its content. Publisher's binding sturdy, scuffing and insect damage to boards; previous owner's bookplate at front pastedown, short tear to tissue guard at frontispiece, library withdrawal stamp at verso of title page, contents unmarked, ghost of circulation slip at rear free endpaper, no other library markings. The book is from the collection of Edward Chase Tolman, Professor at the University of California at Berkeley, and central figure in the California Oath Controversy of the early 1950s. His attractive bookplate, depicting a Tolman Maze, is at the front pastedown, and his signature is at the head of the front free endpaper. 1020 grams.

Cloth. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: fair. First Edition. First Edition. 414 pages. 8vo. Black cloth gilt with embossed emblem of International Publishers lower front right board. Original dust jacket present, often missing. The fugitive light purple now faded to brown at the spine and varying degrees of purple elsewhere (still bright on the internal flaps). Soiling, chipping, wear and tears/creasing to the dust jacket - not a great example but present nonetheless. Original 6.50 price present on front flap. Clean internally. A touch of mottling to the cloth, only visible in raking light. Round label of bookseller "The Norman, Remington Co, Baltimore" on rear pastedown. Cloth. The true first edition of this work. Liveright (often noted as a first American edition) also issued an edition of this work dated 1928, but the copyright credits International Publishers. By this time Liveright was having serious financial problems due to the founder's poor financial management and his other ventures. Translated from the third Russian edition, this volume contains five new chapters from the Author. The translator notes: "We regret we were not able to translate the fiery ardour which glows in the original - the zeal for the hunt of scientific facts". A second volume was published in 1941. "Besides his important work on digestion, Pavlov is remembered for his investigations upon conditioned reflexes. He is one of teh greatest physiologists of all time. An English translation of another work by Pavlov, entitled 'Conditioned Reflexes' appeared in 1927" (Garrison Morton 5/1445) Ivan Pavlov was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1904 "in recognition of his work on the physiology of digestion, through which knowledge on vital aspects of the subject has been transformed and enlarged.".

199 pp; 7 figs. Original cloth. Top & bottom of spine, and joints, very rubbed. Paper label on spine. Good. First Edition of this English translation. In 1928 the English translation by Horsley Gantt of Pavlov's Lectures on Conditioned Reflexes was published by International Publishers. When this Volume II of Pavlov's Lectures on Conditioned Reflexes was published in 1941, Volume I was reissued (the 1941 imprint of volume I is the third printing). Tipped to front flyleaf: TYPED LETTER, SIGNED, FROM HORSLEY GANTT TO STANLEY COBB (see photo). Letterhead: Phipps Psychiatric Clinic, The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Baltimore, Pavlovian Laboratory. The letter reads: "Dr. Stanley Cobb/ Harvard Medical School/ Boston, Mass./ Dear Stanley,/ I requested the publishers to send/ you with my compliments a copy of my "Lectures/ on Conditioned Reflexes: Conditioned Reflexes and Psychiatry", which is just out./ Sincerely yours, W. Horsley Gantt (signed "Horsley")." Ink stamp of "Psychiatric Department/ Massachusetts General Hospital/ Boston, Massachusetts" on bottom right corner of letter. This copy eventually came into the hands of George Gifford Jr. There isn't any ownership marking of his in the book, but there is a letter from George W. Thorn to Gifford in 1980. Thorn spent several years at John Hopkins (1938-1942) working with Horsley Gantt, before Harvard scooped him up in 1942 after Soma Weiss died unexpectedly. Offered with: TYPED LETTER, SIGNED, FROM GEORGE W. THORN, M.D. TO GEORGE E. GIFFORD, JR., M.D., 51 Brattle Street, Cambridge MA 02138, March 3, 1980. (With the envelope). Letterhead: George W. Thorn. M.D. 398 Brookline Ave. Boston MA 02215 (this is a typed correction of the printed address: 45 Shattuck Street, Boston MA 02115). Hersey Professor of the Theory and Practice of Physic, Emeritus, Harvard Medical School. Physician-in-Chief, Emeritus, Peter Bent Brigham Hospital. "Dear George: I was interested in the account in FOCUS of Pavlov's discussions on March 12. Unfortunately, I will be out of the city on that date. I am enclosing a clipping which may be of interest [the New York Times obituary of Gantt, see photo]. Dr. Gantt was a close associate and friend of mine at Hopkins and we worked together on many projects. I thought you might be interested to know about his relationship with Dr. Pavlov. Sincerely George W. Thorn, M.D. (signed "G.")".
