Large steel engraving, overall size folio, image size 7 15/16" wide x 6 1/16" tall. Excised from Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night", one of 48 separate serialized subscription offerings issued under the title "The Works of Shakspere (sic) Edited by Charles Knight". Artist ("PinxT (Pinxit), meaning "the work of") was W.P. Frith, the engraver was J. Brain. Scene for the engraving is "The Duel", from Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night". Very Good, with just moderate foxing and minor chips at bottom edge. See scan. LNG3.

Beautiful steel plate engraving, original ( NOT A REPRODUCTION ) and genuine print from 1851 shows superb depth and detail with a sharp and crisp image. Once properly matted and framed, these marvellous engravings make wonderful pieces of decorative art for the home or studio. Published by the John Tallis Company in London. Measurements as follows: paper size 7-1/4" by 11", image including decorative borders 6 x 8", margins approximately 1". Paper thickness and quality: heavy stock, stable. Paper colour: off-white/cream. Imperfections: bottom margin has watermark 6-1/2 x 2" encroaching on lower edge of decorative work, image area no defects, verso clean. Light foxing. The image is of the Right Honourable William Windham, drawn by Sir John Reynolds and engraved by W.T. Fry. The publisher of this work is the John Tallis Company of London, an English cartographic company that published views, maps, atlases and scholarly works from 1838 to 1851. Their main engraver was John Rapkin, known for his decorative stylized work and lovely vignettes and who is considered the last bastion of English decorative cartography in the 19th century. The John Tallis Company also used engravings by other fine artists, such as William Finden, Thomas Stothard, DJ Point, Peter Lightfoot and several others. For general interest, the background of a few of these magnificent engravers follows. William Finden originally served as an apprentice under the guidance of James Mitan but his work is more generally influenced by James Heath. He first worked engraving book illustrations - one of the more noteworthy of these early plates were Smirkes illustrations for Don Quixote. His fastidious style and smooth finish made his work extremely popular and along with his brother Edward he eventually hired a company of assistants to produce additional works. Thomas Stothard ( 1755-1834) was both a painter and engraver who produced about 5000 designs, of which 3000 were engraved. A 4-volume collection of his engravings is now held by the British Museum. William Thomas Fry ( 1789-1843, active 1829 to 1935 ) among other works engraved 8 portraits for Edmond Lodge's Portraits of Illustrious Personages of Great Britain, contributed 4 plates to Fisher's National Portrait Gallery 1830-1834 and 11 to Jones' National Gallery 1836. He was one of the earlist engravers to experiment with steel plates. Scans available on request.

Original publisher's black and white engraved nautical charts of False Dungeness Harbor and New Dungeness Harbor in Washington Territory. The two charts are divided by a printed vertical line in the center. 1853 and 1856. Paper with margins measures 24 1/4" x 10 3/4"; actual chart area measures 22 1/4" x 9 1/2." Paper is very clean and intact except for slight darkening and a few creases and wrinkles. Titles are printed in the corners within each chart. In the upper-left corner is "No. 53." "Redd. [Reduced?] Drng. [Drawing] by J. R. Key" is printed in the lower-left corner. "Engd. [Engraved] by S. W. Bradley & App. W. A. Thompson." is printed in the lower-right corner. "Engd. by W. Smith & App. J. S. Pettit. Redd. Drng. by W. P. Schultz" is printed below the neatline in the center. Scales of distance in statute and nautical miles are included for each chart. Charts include soundings and show the topography and hydrography of False Dungeness Harbor and New Dungeness Harbor. Also included within each chart are a compass rose and notes with details about the soundings and other sailing directions. Internally, second edition, with Branch frontis, plates with imprints & signatures removed, a.e.g, 36 leaves, 2 title pages and 2 leaves of descriptive text for each plate (titles and text in both English and French - the French text in double columns) 18 hand coloured aquatint plates. The English & French text leaves watermarked J Waterman 1822 whilst the coloured plates are watermarked J Waterman 1824! Complete, and with its own modern green cloth box with title to spine. Very clean plates, which often are not so! (Folio, 31.5*45 cms). (Abbey 10. Tooley 305. Bobins 678). Title continues: From drawings made expressly for this undertaking by PJ de Loutherbourg. With Historical and descriptive accounts of the several places of which views are given. Engraved by William Pickett and coloured by John Clark. The beautiful plates in this work depict picturesque scenery in a highly romantic style. Loutherbourg worked as a stage designer under David Garrick, was a member of the Royal Academy and befriended Gainsborough, each painting the others portrait in 1778.
