Wood engraving of myrtle by Reynolds Stone on the sectional title pages and the same image blind-stamped on the front board, a nice subtle touch. Jacket for the American edition…designed by Jules Madoff. Jacket is tanned in a strip at the top of the back panel, front panel has a short tear at the top left corner next to the spine and a few nicks along the top edge. "A virile and colloquial rendering . . . The only complete modern translation . . . " from the front of the dust jacket. Bilingual edition, Latin and English in facing pages. A very readable, unstilted translation. With notes, a biography of Ovid, and commentary on his own translation by Lee. Ovid was frankly lustful and, in modern parlance, a player, with little of the begging coyness of the love poetry of English poets like Andrew Marvell.
