A detailed record of Parry"s visit to the headquarters of the Syrian Church in Mesopotamia, with chapters on Mardin, Deir-el-Za"feran, Syrian villages, Tur Abdin, Nisibis, Mosul, and the monastery of Sheikh Mattah. The work also includes sections on the old Syrian Church, the Yazidis of Mosul, and a translation of an Arabic manuscript, with a preface by Brooke Foss Westcott, Bishop of Durham. Oswald H. Parry was a Magdalen College, Oxford, graduate whose travels in Mesopotamia produced this unusually detailed account of the Syrian Church and its monasteries. Loosely inserted are related pieces concerning the Syrian Church, including The Ancient Church in Syria and two numbered extracts from Parry"s letters from Mardin, dated 1892.
