This book introduces a new type of calorimeter, a device for measuring heat capacity, which has a cylindrical copper vessel with a coil of resistance wire embedded in its walls to supply heat electrically, and a platinum resistance coil used as a thermometer. These elements enable the calorimeter to be used over a wide temperature range and for various problems. The calorimeter is mounted in a jacket surrounded by a bath of gasoline, the temperature of which can be controlled thermostatically within a few thousandths of a degree, or changed rapidly to keep it the same as that of the calorimeter. Differences in temperature between the calorimeter's surface and that of the jacket are measured by thermocouples. The book includes experiments that demonstrate the calorimeter's effectiveness. The results show that this calorimeter gives reproducible results to within one part in 2000, and the measurements made between 0 and 40° C agree with the most probable values taken from data gathered in the most careful investigations published by other observers. The author's insights contribute significantly to the field of calorimetry. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
