Commonly referred to as the moorland falcon, this species is adapted for hunting avian prey in open and semi-open environments. The book highlights the importance of special conservation measures for the Merlin, as stipulated by European regulations aimed at ensuring the survival and reproduction of this bird.The report discusses the legal protections afforded to the Merlin under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and the Wildlife (Northern Ireland) Order 1985, which safeguard them against persecution and disturbance near their nests. Despite these protections, the Merlins face significant conservation challenges due to their expansive hunting ranges and the fact that over 90% of the UK's Merlin population breeds outside designated conservation sites. Consequently, the conservation of their breeding habitats hinges on UK government policies regarding the countryside and the practices of private landowners in farming, forestry, and sporting activities.Orchel's work also notes ongoing concerns about the British Merlin population, which continues to be perceived as declining in some areas, largely due to habitat loss and potential toxic contamination.
