Añadir al carritoFine, fresh, unread copy. Color illustrated softcovers. 128 pp. with index. 298 rare, unpublished, primary source photographs and a fascinating text tell the compelling story of how and why modern ocean lifeguards emerged on the New Jersey Shore. The earliest visitors to the New Jersey shore would have seen and walked on pristine, deserted beaches. By the mid-19th century, the Jersey Shore, from Sandy Hook to Cape May, became an increasingly popular tourist destination and larger and more elaborate Victorian era hotels were erected along beachfront property. To protect tourists, the Atlantic City Beach Patrol, originally made up of volunteers beginning around 1872, was made a City department in 1891(it's recognized as the oldest in the United States); other lifesaving groups sprang up along the Jersey Shore in the last decade of the 19th century and first decade of the 20th (Ocean City in 1898 for example, and Avalon in 1905). The boats and other equipment evolved over the decades as well. Jeanne Bonk Baldino was the first female lifeguard (1944 in Belmar).

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Fine condition. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Near Fine dust jacket. First Edition, Limited to 3000 copies. West Kennebunk, Maine: Phoenix Publishing, 2000. Signed in full ("Bernard A. Olsen") by the Author on the half title page (his signature only; NOT personalized to anyone). Fine condition in a Near Fine dust jacket. NOT price clipped ($35.00). NO chips. NO tears. Bright, shiny, clean, square, and tight. Sharp corners. NO owner's name or bookplate. NOT a remainder. Pages are fresh and crisp. 8.75" wide by 11.25" tall. First Edition. Limited to 3,000 copies. Tells the true story of Franklin Murphy, veteran of the 13th New Jersey Volunteers. Murphy survived some of the Civil War's most ferocious battles, returned home to a career as a successful industrialist and, in 1901, become New Jersey's Governor. The book is lavishly illustrated with maps, document facsimiles, and Civil War photographs, most previously unpublished. This is must reading for Civil War enthusiasts due, in part, to the multitude of unusual and at times highly personal observations on the conflicts. Bibliographical references. Index. Bound in the original off-white boards with a brown cloth spine, lettered in shiny gold. From the Dust Jacket: "The major thrust of this book is Murphy's Civil War experience. Drawing on newly discovered sources that include Murphy's diaries, letters, and other private papers At the conclusion of their spotty training, the 13th Regiment was sent to Arlington, outside Washington, DC, to construct earthworks and rifle pits. Shortly thereafter they went into action in the bloody battle of Antietam, followed by the battles of Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. Next they made their way to Atlanta and then participated in Sherman's famous March to the Sea and north to Richmond and Washington, DC." . Signed by Author (signature only).
