Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book offers a remarkable insight into the geological composition of North Carolina, examining a geographical area the author refers to as the 'Free-stone and Coal formation of Orange and Chatham.' This region is found to contain abundant supplies of sandstone and bituminous coal, as well as beds of slate and valuable minerals such as iron ore, granite, limestone, and whetstone. The author presents a detailed analysis of these rock formations and their characteristics, with a particular focus on their potential for industrial and architectural use. The book provides valuable information on the use of these natural resources for building materials, millstones, grindstones, whetstones, and even the production of copperas and alum. The significance of this work lies in its comprehensive examination of a specific geological region, offering insights into the industrial potential of its mineral resources and their applications in various aspects of human endeavor. He reported his data and analysis in an extensive pair of articles, which culminated in the startling conjecture that some ''nebulous body'' must lie between the Earth and the Sun, with an orbital period of precisely 182 days. Using the Joseph Henry magnet with the refracting telescope, He and tutor Loomis observed Halley's comet in 1835 before words of its reappearance had come to Europe. 2 important plates; The Great Comet of 1843 and Nebulae and Double Stars.
