O'Connor was born in Edinburgh in 1869 of Scottish-Irish parentage. He held various government appointments in Burma during the 1890s, following the British annexation of Thibaw's kingdom. This was a period of rapid change, and O'Connor was fortunate in being able to journey widely recording much that is now lost. In The Silken East he describes life and travel on rivers such as the Chindwin, Irrawaddy and Salween, delightfully sketching the towns and peoples he encountered along the way. He also explored the remote southern coastline of Mergui and there is a fascinating portrayal of parts of the Shan and Palaung Hills. The Silken East is not just a beautiful object with wonderful old photographs and contemporary paintings, it is also a mine of information on the ethnography, Buddhism and cultural life of Burma. In his day O'Connor was a well known travel writer and in addition to his equally famous Mandalay he wrote books on a number of subjects including life with the Royal Navy, personal experiences of the Great War, and travels in the Aegean, Kashmir and Morocco. He died in 1945. The Silken East was first published in a magnificent twin volume edition in 1904. This facsimile is reproduced from the single volume second edition of 1928. There are 192 contemporary photographs of outstanding quality and 8 colour plates of paintings by J.R. Middleton and the Burmese court artist Saya Chone. J.R. Middleton; Saya Chone (ilustrador).
