Schon während des Studiums arbeitete er als Literaturkritiker für mehrere deutsche und Schweizer Tages- und Wochenzeitungen sowie für den Hörfunk und sammelte Erfahrungen als Mitarbeiter bei Theaterfestivals, in Verlagen und Buchhandlungen. Er war eingebunden in Ausstellungs- und Medienprojekte und war Mitarbeiter bei einem Lexikonprojekt zur deutschsprachigen Gegenwartsliteratur, das er einige Jahre später als Herausgeber übernahm. Nach dem Abschluss des Studiums mit der Promotion 1993 und der 6.
