Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: new. Paperback. How can design processes assist in understanding the underlying and hybrid nature of water systems in our urban environments so that we can better prepare for the densification of cities and the impact of climate change? This book captures propositions and speculations around this question through design studies undertaken in three Australian cities: Melbourne's low-lying swampy areas, Brisbane's flooding river valley and Perth's deep groundwater network. Each of these cities has its own set of challenges around water, based on their particular natural environmental conditions and the radical modifications over 200 years that have fundamentally changed the way that water moves. The ambitious schemes of the past - dams, drains, canals, sewers, reservoirs, lakes, aqueducts - made room for the 'progress' of the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Now in the twenty-first century we need new ambitions where urban environments can adapt to the unpredictability of water through its extremes of dry and wet conditions. The design responses in this book contribute to such an aim by understanding the past, present and possible future conditions of local sites, and using this knowledge to create multi-purposed, alternative design scenarios towards a water-sensitive city. There is a confluence between available contemporary development land and problematic water sites. Many of the places in which contemporary development is occurring were not part of the originally planned city, and were leftover places that were never really suitable for development because of their water issues; these include high groundwater areas in Perth, low-lying flood-prone post-industrial lands in Melbourne, and urbanised flooding zones of Brisbane. These areas, now in central focus to accommodate large-scale city development for growing urban populations, demand new ways of thinking and building. How can design processes assist in understanding the underlying and hybrid nature of water systems in our urban environments so that we can better prepare for the densification of cities and the impact of climate change? Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Worldwide, more and more people are living in cities, with suburbs conceived as appendages to the city, rather than being part of the city system, which is densely populated and offers a full range of services. But suburbs are not the city spread too thin, and in fact hold potential for a lived complexity as satisfying as that assumed to be available in inner cities. Just as the ecological function of wetlands was ignored by modernist planning, and swamps once-drained are now recognised as vital to water cycles, suburbs are increasingly recognised as part of a citys wellbeing with their own alternative ideology and opportunities for urbanity and ecological sustainability. Suburbia Reimagined shows how such subdivision structures can offer new possibilities for sustainably integrating living between generations and between established and arriving migrant communities. The authors worked locally and internationally with university campuses, shopping centres, hospitals, airports, and other large entities spread through suburbia, to identify a broad range of suburban situations that have been modified to ensure that residents have a full access to amenities and services. The book addresses the history and design of suburbia, from the post-war soldier settlements of the 40s and 50s to the university hinterlands of Silicon Valley in order to reappraise the locked potential within such subdivision patterns. The authors propose a new model forward, examining case studies ranging from repurposed malls and railways for ecological sustainability to cul-de-sacs as social units and post-industrial factory conversions, ultimately showing the nascent patterns in suburbia that have the potential to support a rich life for all age groups. Suburbia Reimagined offers a practical model for designers and planners to align and design public and private spaces to make suburbia more accessible.
