Añadir al carritoRichly illustrated manual on perspective in which for the first time the secrets of anamorphosis and trompe l'oeil are fully revealed by Jean François Niceron (1613-1646), Minim friar, professor in mathematics, and specialist in geometrical optics. The work also contained the first published reference to Descartes's derivation of the law of refraction and it deals with the perspective rendering of geometric objects of unusual shape, with anamorphoses and with the camera obscura. First published in 1638 with 25 plates only, Niceron's work is here heavily enlarged by Roberval, in text, more detail in the already published plates and in 25 extra plates. It is published together with the posthumously published first edition of a scholarly work on optics and catoptics by Marin Mersenne (1588-1648), who is particulary known for his Mersenne primes. In this work, also his major work, Niceron concentrates in four books primarily on the practical applications of perspective, catoptrics, and dioptrics, following the latest theoretical developments, and on the illusory effects of optics, then traditionally associated with natural magic. The added work by Mersenne contains the author's final contributions to optics, including experimental studies of visual acuity and binocular vision, but also a critical discussion of current hypotheses on the nature of light. With some manuscript notes and mathematical diagrams in black ink on the endpapers and the back paste-down, but also throughout the text, and a (later?) drawing of a pig and a gnome (?) with red-brown pencil on one of the endpapers. Also some notes in black ink and with the redbrown pencil in three (?) different hands on plate 32, 44, 45 and 48. Spine slightly rubbed. Some occasional browning, some small stains and one tear on B3 in the second work, all not affecting the plates or text. Otherwise in good condition.l Berlin Kat. 4713 (1638 ed. with 25 plates); Cioranescu 47238 (listed under Mersenne); Poggendorff II, 279; not in Fowler; for Niceron and Mersenne: DSB X, pp. 103 & 316. Contemporary calf, gold-tooled spine, gold double fillet borders on both boards and the spine. With engraved allegorical title page by Daret, full-page engraved portrait of Niceron by Michel Lasne, several woodcut diagrams in text and, bound at the end of the book, 50 engraved plates (1 double-page) with numerous illustrations showing perspective drawings, optical illusions and trompe l'oeil. Pages: [16], 191, [1]; [12], 134 pp. With: (2) MERSENNE, Marin. L'optique et la catoptrique.Paris, the widow of F. Langlois, dit Chartres, 1651. Añadir al carrito2 works in 1 volume. Jean-François Niceron (1613-1646) was a multi-talented individual who excelled in mathematics, painting and engraving, and a member of the scholarly order of the Minimes. He had a keen interest in optics and made significant contributions to this field. Niceron's Perspective, his most famous work today, is a practical publication that resulted from his extensive study of perspective theory. He observed that the illustrations in earlier treatises on this subject were often flawed and that the accompanying texts were too complicated for readers without prior knowledge. Niceron's intention in writing his book was to create an easily understandable treatise on perspective that could benefit a wide range of professionals, including painters, architects, sculptors, engineers and anyone involved in drawing. He believed that the principles of perspective could be explained through methods based on natural observation, such as taking geometric measurements from the human body.Mersenne was considered one of the foremost geometricians of the 17th century and maintained relationships with some of the leading scholars of Europe, including Galileo, as a correspondent and intermediary. He also developed principles related to the telescope and reflection well before Gregory and Newton wrote about them. In 1640, Mersenne embarked on a scientific journey to southern France and Italy, followed by a second trip to Italy in 1641, and a third in 1644-1645. His Optique, consists of 31 propositions published in French, rather than Latin, with a focus on practical application, although it likely held less value than Niceron's Perspective, with which it was paired. The Catoptrique consists of 16 propositions, refers to the study of reflections, reflecting surfaces, and mirrors in optics. With an owner's inscription on the front paste-down "N. Krogstius[?] No 3" and four manuscript annotations - referring to the number of the corresponding plate or elaborating on the text - in the margins of pp. 97, 98, 157 and 167, one in ink and three in pencil. The binding shows signs of wear, front hinge cracked, small worm holes in the boards. Some (near) contemporary waste paper visible in the gutters of the first and last flyleaves showing a cursive manuscript text in brown ink. The leaves are cut slightly short, barely affecting any text, slightly browned throughout (varying from quire to quire). Plates 49 and 50 are bound upside down and thus placing plate 49 after plate 50. Otherwise in good condition.l Caillet, 7972; Cicognara, 849 (1638 edition); DSB, X, pp. 103; Hofer, Baroque book illustration, 41; The Millard architectural collection, French 124. 18th-century brown sheepskin over beechwood(?) boards, sewn on 4 supports, blue sprinkled edges. With a folded engraved portrait of the author as a frontispiece (signed Mafne), an engraved title-page (dated 1652, signed Daret), Du Puis's woodcut device on the letterpress title-page (two angels holding an enormous French royal crown with fleurs-de-lis, aboce Du Puis's small personal mark: 4, cross and heart with "IDP", the whole headed by a ribbon with the motto "non coronabitur nisi qui legitime certaverit"), 50 full-page engraved plates (including 1 folding, no. 44, some signed Ioan Blanchin incidit or F. Joan Franciscus Niceron inven.), each numbered in a decorative banner in the plate, except for plate 22 which is numbered on a scroll in the corner of the plate, and with numerous woodcut geometric, astronomic, optical and other figures in the text, including 1 representing a human eye. With woodcut ornamental head- and tailpieces and woodcut decorated initials (at least 3 series) and with a small vignette on the title-page for L'optique matching some of the tailpieces throughout the work. Pages: [1], [1 blank], [1], [1 blank], [8], 191, [1]; [1], [1 blank], [10], 134, [2 blank] pp. Including: MERSENNE, Marin. L'optique et la catoptrique du reverend Pere Mersenne minime. Nouvellement mise en lumiere, aprés lar mort de l'autheur. Paris, the widow of F. Langlois, 1651.

Bookplates of Newbattle Abbey Library, [First] Earl of Ancram [Sir Robert Kerr (c. 1578âÂÂ"1654)] and the Honorable William Marquiss of Lothian (General William John Kerr, 5th Marquess of Lothian, 1737-1815). Fine. ANAMORPHOSES AND THE THEORY OF PERSPECTIVE. First edition, with a fine provenance, of Niceron's important treatise on perspective, geometrical optics, and anamorphic projection, which gains added significance in the history of science for containing (in Book IV) "perhaps the first published reference to Descartes' derivation of the law of refraction (1638) and thus gains some historical significance" -- DSB. / The work is famous for its study of the application of illusion to optical science: "The classic phase of anamorphosis, during which it came to relate vitally to a series of scientific and theological concerns, occurred in France and Rome in the 1630s and 1640s. The theorist at the centre of the Paris-Rome developments was Jean-Francois Niceron" -- Kemp. / "This richly illustrated manual on perspective revealed for the first time the secrets of anamorphosis and trompe l'oeil. It contained the first published reference to Descartes's derivation of the law of refraction. First published in 1638 with 25 plates only, Niceron's work was later enlarged by Roberval in a far inferior edition (1663). Divided into four Books, the first Book presents briefly the fundamental geometrical theorems, and then develops a general method of perspective, borrowing heavily from Alberti and Durer." âÂÂ" go_geometry. / Jean-Francois Niceron (1613-1646), born in Paris, was a French mathematician, Minim [Catholic] friar, and painter of anamorphic art, on which he wrote the ground-breaking book, "La Perspective Curieuse." He travelled widely throughout Europe and was and awarded a professorship in Rome. / Provenance: Sir Robert Kerr (c. 1578âÂÂ"1654) was a Scottish nobleman.
