Please feel free to inquire as to particulars and/or additional photographs. . Dr Charles M. Nice, Jr, founding chairman of the Radiology Department at Tulane University, New Orleans. A native of Parsons, Kan, Dr Nice had lived in New Orleans, La, since 1958. In 1960, he was named chairman of the Radiology Department at Tulane University, which had been part of the Internal Medicine Department. He was also radiology chairman of the Charity Hospital (New Orleans, La). Dr Nice stepped down as chairman in 1984 but continued to teach, research, and write. In addition to instructing residents at Tulane, he taught regularly at the Ochsner Clinic (New Orleans, La) for 40 years. He wrote more than 100 articles and authored or co-authored nine textbooks. Dr Nice entered college when he was 15 years old, starting at Labette Community College in Parsons. He earned his undergraduate and MD degrees at the University of Kansas and a PhD degree in radiology from the University of Minnesota. He also earned an MS degree at the University of Colorado. To pay his tuition, he played piano, clarinet, and saxophone with a series of jazz bands, and he toured Kansas and Oklahoma. He also composed and published music; he wrote over 100 songs for his family, friends, and colleagues. Dr Nice was a battalion surgeon in the South Pacific during World War II. He was scheduled to be part of the force invading Japan until that country surrendered after the United States dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Because Dr Nice traveled frequently to medical meetings in Central and South America, he taught himself Spanish so he could lecture in his hosts' language. He also taught himself enough Japanese to carry on basic conversations. He was a fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine, a former member of the American College of Chest Physicians' Board of Governors, and a reviewer for three medical journals. He also was a member of local, state, and national medical organizations In exceptionally good condition.

A rollicking cover illustration of a Pantagruel type astride a flamingo and a crowd of clowns and masqueraders below, perfecting evoking the joyful anarchy of Carnaval, and within, an eight panel panorama and program. Wraps are 27 by 19 cm, and the panels within are of slighly smaller dimension, with a total length, when stretched out, of 160 cm. Depicted on the panorama is a colorful parade of floats and various comical figures, with everything drawn with a deliberately crude, or naive, pen and brush that heightens the farcical flavor of the rendering. This panoramic brochure was issued as a souvenir for the Nice Carnaval, the pre-Lent celebration with roots in Nice going back to the Middle Ages and for which Nice had become famous, perhaps second only to the Carnaval of Venice, which in a number of ways Nice emulated. A parade to celebrate Carnaval was first done in 1873, and it is the parade that is the core of what is depicted here. It is unknown whether this program was issued for a particular event, or what seems more probable, as a more general souvenir. Scarce, with no copies of this edition of what was an annual located on OCLC, and only a few copies found of any edition (the 1898, 1899 and 1906 editions, one copy each: Bibliotheque Nationale; 1907 edition, two copies: Bayerische Staatsbibliotheque and the Deutsche Nationalbibliotheque). Wraps are soiled. Discrete tape repair running along the "joint". Endpapers and rear cover are filled with evocative ads. Several flattened creases, short closed tears and minor chips. The panorama itself is very well preserved with no significant issues.
