Some discolouration and internal foxing, some rubbing on extremities of hardcovers, some separation internally of book spine, otherwise a very fine copies. Four volumes of the Stand Magazine dating from January 1891 to December 1892. The British monthly magazine was founded in 1890 by Sir George Newness (1st Baron) and is most famous for being the first publication to publish Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Adventures of Sherlock Homes. The name of the magazine originates from the proximity of its offices to The Strand - London's Oldest Street, and the heart of a city that was the centre of the cultural and economic world, when during the Victorian Era when the British Empire was at its most dominant. Parallel to this huge global cultural influence is the literary juggernaut of the Sherlock Holmes stories which had a profound effect on crime fiction and popular culture, being one of the most portrayed and adapted literary characters in film and T.V. history. These volumes contain 13 adventures of Sherlock Homes, including A Scandal in Bohemia; the first ever Sherlock story to be published. Also included is the story, 'A Day with Dr. Conan Doyle' by Henry Low, that includes illustrations of Conan himself, his family, his house, and house interiors. There are close to 300 stories within the four volumes, and include foreign stories translated into English from Russian, Norwegian, Spanish, and French, by authors such as Balzac and Pushkin. Other interesting details include portraits of contemporary celebrities such as Her Majesty the Queen and John Ruskin. These volumes contain numerous opportunity to explore and enjoy the literary and social world of Victorian and Edwardian England during a period in history of extreme prosperity and substance.
