One critic has called its teasing quality nothing short of "Nabokovian". In its earthiness, its psychological acuity, it speaks over centuries to our time. And w/ this new translation by Allen Mandelbaum, the "Metamorphosis" for our age has been created. The "Metamorphosis" is a treasury of classical myths, filtered through the worldly & far from reverent sensibility of the Roman poet Ovid (43 B.C. - A.D. 17). It weaves together every major mythological story to display a dazzling array of miraculous metamorphoses, from the time chaos is transformed into order at the moment of creation to the time when the soul of Julius Caesar is turned into a star & set in the heavens. The vain youth, Narcissus, transformed into a flower & damned to pine away at his own reflection . . . the terrified Daphne, transformed through her own prayers into a quivering laurel tree to escape the advances & enchantments of Apollo . . . the son of Hermes & Aphrodite, merged for eternity with a nymph into "one body with a single face & form" & thus transformed into Hermaphroditus. Through the poetic artistry of Allen Mandlebaum, this gloriously entertaining achievement of classical literature, whose influence on English literature is rivaled perhaps only by that of the Bible, is revealed anew. * ABOUT THE TRANSLATOR: ALLEN MANDELBAUM is the author of 5 verse volumes. His translations of Homer, Dante, Virgil, Quasimodo, & Ungaretti have all been richly praised; for his translation of "The Aeneid" he won the National Book Award. Mandelbaum is the William R. Kenan, Jr., Professor of Humanities at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. * SHIPPING: MNEMOSYNE wraps, seals & labels this fine book w/ our greatest elegance & care to assure secure FREE shipment via USPS MEDIA MAIL within the United States & its territories w/ USPS PRIORTY MAIL available within the United States for a below-cost additional fee.

Universally acknowledged as the greatest poem of the European Middle Ages, it also marks the first time the vernacular was used in the high Western literary tradition to express ultimate issues of being & transcendence. Uniting the most powerful energies of popular culture & the magnificent Gothic edifice of medieval scholasticism, Dante created a new language that combined an intense lyricism w/ the intellectual seriousness demanded of his project--nothing less than the creation of a Christian epic addressed to the common reader. Dante's synthesis of epic w/ lyric has bequeathed to modern artists & translators a permanent imperative to translate his art into contemporary, living speech. In this brilliant & highly accessible new translation of the "Inferno", Elio Zappulla successfully recreates the immediacy, directness, & psychological force of Dante's original text. Zappulla's faithfulness to Dante's Italian is matched by an unobtrusive & beautifully executed commitment to convey to today's reader, through the lyrical cadences of everyday American English, the emotional & aesthetic impact of what he calls Dante's "complex simplicity". At the same time, the reader is never allowed to lose sight of the "Inferno's" intellectual majesty & moral grandeur. This edition of the "Inferno" is illustrated by the paintings of Gregory Gillespie, a contemporary artist who has been engaged w/ Dante's writings & imaginative world throughout his career. They provide a complimentary means of meditating on the continuing meanings & resonances of one of the defining works of art of the Western tradition. * HIGHEST PRAISE: "An unexpected & glorious gift. The love of Dante comes through in the text--every line carefully, beautifully translated. -Wallace Fowlie, Duke University. "Elio Zappull's highly readable verse translation of Dante's "Inferno" reaches the core of Dante's sense of the real. Zapulla's scholarship is useful in helping the reader approach this masterpiece of world literature. -Giuseppi F. Mazzotta, Yale University * ABOUT THE TRANSLATOR: EMILO ZAPPULLA is the author of several scholarly articles on Dante & Italian literature. He teaches at Dowling College & loves in Stony Brook, New York. * SHIPPING: MNEMOSYNE carefully wraps, labels & custom-packages this fine book for FREE domestic shipment via USPS MEDIA MAIL or USPS PRIORITY MAIL for a nominal additional fee & via efficient USPS FIRST CLASS MAIL to all international shipments at our posted rates.

The trials & exile, return & revenge of Odysseus are consummately chanted in a verse-line that embodies both Homer's speed & his retardations, as well as his resonating repetitions. Mandelbaum gives us an "Odyssey" as astute & "thought-ful" as its protagonist, the "man of many wiles." The language of this hero & this Homer lets us see w/ clarity why the "Odyssey" played so rich a role in a culture bent on energy of form & energy of intellect. Like Homer's Greek, Mandelbaum's English rewards attentive minds & ears. It must be read aloud & savored, & long reflected upon. * HIGHEST PRAISE: "What makes Mandelbaum's 'Odyssey' so special is its capacity to let Homeric epic sing in the rhythms & idiom of a living language, a splendid achievement outstripping all competitors." -Antony A. Long, Author of 'Hellenistic Philosophy: Stoics, Epicureans, Sceptics' * ABOUT THE TRANSLATOR: ALLEN MANDELBAUM is the author of 5 verse volumes, including 'The Savantasse of Montparnasse' ("one of the most oriiginal & most important poems written in English during the last 50 years" - Bruce Weigle, Choice), the 'Aeneid of Virgil' & the 3 volumes of the 'California Dante'. Kenan, Jr., Professor of Humanities at Wakwe Forest University. * SHIPPING: MNEMOSYNE carefully wraps, labels & packages this fine book w/ our greatest elegance & care for FREE shipment via USPS MEDIA MAIL within the United States & its territories or via USPS PRIORITY MAIL for a below cost fee of $16.00 w/ shipping to all international destinations via USPS FIRST CLASS MAIL at our posted rates.
