Añadir al carritoSoft cover. Condición: Near Fine. No Jacket. NEW BIRMINGHAM, TEXAS, AS IT IS OCTOBER 1891, created for the New Birmingham Development Co., reprinted in 1968 by the Rusk (TX) Tourist Committee, softcover, many photographs. BOOK CONDITION: near fine. The text block and illustrations are in fine condition with no marks, tears, or d…ogears. There is no bookplate nor inscription. Not a library book nor remainder. 7 x 10 ¼, 56 pages, 6 ounces XX This is a fine example of late 19th century boomtown boosterism looked like. New Birmingham, Texas is now a ghost town in the forests of East Texas, but it one time held out hopes for becoming an iron-producing center. They were genuine dreams based on real possibilities, not a scam. [From the afterword] This booklet is an exact reproduction of the brochure printed by the New Birmingham Development Company during the time the city flourished. New Birmingham was the famous boom city carved out of the forest near Rusk, Cherokee County, Texas, in the late 1880s. It was heralded as the 'iron queen of the SouthWest,' and intriguing tales from those who knew it in its day reveal the romance and splendor of its meteoric career. Registers of New Birmingham's palatial Southern Hotel contain the signatures of many famous visitors, including Grover Cleveland (US President), R.B. Roosevelt (uncle of Theodore Roosevelt), Jay Gould, and Texas governor James Hogg. New York and London financiers risked their millions in the attempted development of Cherokee County iron resources. The national panic of 1893, the passage of the Texas Alien Land Law which discouraged foreign investment, and a disastrous fire at the largest furnace combined to bring about insurmountable financial problems which sounded the death knell of New Birmingham. By the end of the 19th century the iron queen was number among Texas ghost cities. XX Photos in the brochure depict the Southern Hotel (exterior and interiors), the iron ore furnaces, surface mining of iron ore, a pipe works, a brick company, planing and shingle mill, electric light plant, ice factory, the bank, park and railroad Depot, various residences, Two-story downtown buildings, newspaper building, New Birmingham Institute [drawing, not a photo, so not yet built], picnic grounds, cottonfield, vineyards, Chalybeate Springs, Presbyterian Church, Stafford Lake, Walnut Grove. XX There are also ads for real estate and investment agents, a building company, Kodak cameras, banks, railroads, Rand McNally publishers, The New Birmingham Times newspaper.
