Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: New. John Shaw Neilson (1872-1942) is Australia's great lyric poet and Collected Poems (1934), dedicated to Louise Dyer, bears his imprimatur. Encouraged by his editor, Robert Croll, Neilson was totally involved in its publication and promotion, selecting the poems, rewriting lines, adding new stanzas and restoring A.G. Stephen's earlier changes.Photographic sittings and book signings followed as well as favourable reviews. Neilson modestly attended readings in his honour at the Bookshop of Margareta Webber and enjoyed the concert broadcasts of Margaret Sutherland's compositions, which included 'The Orange Tree'. After reading the Collected Poems she wrote to Neilson: "I have set your voice to music."A new introduction by Dr Helen Hewson, an honorary associate in the School of Letters, Art and Media at the University of Sydney, explores some of the influences that have shaped Neilson's poetry - his Celtic background, religious upbringing, reading and writing, and love of art and music. First published in 1934 by Lothian Book Publishing Company.

Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: new. Paperback. The first metropolis to be depicted in Australian literature was Hell: before cities existed in Australia, Francis McNamara, the convict poet, described the infernal one populated by those who tormented him and his fellow prisoners. Sentenced in 1832 to seven years' transportation to Australia for stealing a plaid, he survived the brutality of the penal system: his witty, rebellious poems laid the foundations for a new Australian poetry. Les Murray's anthology of poets from the early years of European settlement in Australia reaches back in time from his fivefathers, which collected significant voices from the early twentieth century (Kenneth Slessor, Roland Robinson, David Campbell, James McAuley, Francis Webb). "Hell and After" contains extended selections from the work of four writers. Francis McNamara (1811-1880) is the only poet whose work has survived from the convict era. Mary Gilmore (1865-1962) was born to a pioneering life in the bush; she became a social reformer and renowned figure in the Australian Labor Party, and her poems are much loved by Australians for their vivid evocations of colonial life. John Shaw Neilson (1872-1942), who spent most of his life as a manual labourer, wrote poems of great lyricism and humour under conditions of poverty and ill-health. Lesbia Harford (1891-1927), a radical activist who was one of the first women to graduate with a law degree from the University of Melbourne, worked as a factory machinist and domestic servant. Her poems give voice to a woman's experience of working life and private desire. Reading these poets is to experience a culture in the process of creating itself. Please contact us if you have a question about this title.Author: Margaret RobertsFormat: Paperback Number of Pages: 416John Shaw Neilson received only a basic education, yet became one of Australia's best poets. He was born at Penola, South Australia on 22 February 1872. Raised by a family of poor labourers, Neilson worked as a farm hand. In 1893 he won a national poetry prize, and as a young man he contributed to various publications, gathering both critical and commercial praise across Australia. In 1919, following the First World War, Neilson published his first full collection, Heart of Spring, to widespread acclaim, following it in 1923 with another collection, Ballad and Lyrical Poems. In 1927 he published New Poems, and in 1934 the first Collected Poems appeared. His last collection Beauty Imposes, published in 1938, was lauded by literary critics and led Robert FitzGerald to remark that, 'no other Australian poet has Neilson's skill with words and rhythms.' Vivian Smith called him 'the foremost poet of his generation.'. Paperback.
