Die Bundesrepublik schien im Zeichen des 'Wirtschaftswunders' Anschluss an das Lebensniveau der westeuropäischen Nachbarn gefunden zu haben: Der Satz »Keine Experimente« verkörperte auch den Zeitgeist.»Sputnik-Schock«, die Römischen Verträge, der Vorabend der zweiten großen Berlin-Krise, die Einmaligkeit einer absoluten Mehrheit bei einer Bundestagswahl, Reformdruck in der Gesellschaft, ein Beginn sichtbaren Generations- und Mentalitätswandels im Westen prägten dieses Jahr. Andere Herausforderungen kennzeichneten die DDR: Das Ministerium für Staatssicherheit richtete sich neu aus und misstraute zuerst dem eigenen Volk. Die Wirtschaft sollte sich nach den Plänen der SED-Führung beschleunigt entwickeln, für die stagnierende Landwirtschaft suchten Experten nach neuen Konzepten. Schriftsteller und Wissenschaftler gerieten zwischen alle Fronten.Eine breite Palette politischer, wirtschaftlicher, gesellschafts-, mentalitäts- und ideengeschichtlicher Probleme in Ost und West gerät in den Blick. Der Band will dabei keine Chronik des Jahres 1957 vorlegen, sondern vielmehr Vorgänge dieses Jahres zum Ausgangspunkt für eine weitere Betrachtung nehmen. Es stellt sich die leitende Frage, inwiefern 1957 in beiden deutschen Staaten ein Wendejahr oder wenigstens eine »weiche«, eine symbolische Zäsur für Wandlungsprozesse ab dem Ausgang der 1950er Jahre bildete.
