The book is in excellent with clean cove…rs, no fading or darkening to cover cloth (which is common for this book), usual slight tanning to pages, no foxing, solid binding, crease mark in top outside corner of 2 pages where once folded over to mark pages. The uncommon original dust jacket has small loss at spine ends up to 1cm deep, smaller loss at tips of flap fold corners, edge rubbing, two 2cm tears top front, 1cm tear bottom front at spine crease with crinkle mark extending into front panel, 5cm split along bottom rear flap fold with crinkling into the associated area of rear panel, price-clipped inside front flap corner. The book measures 219mm tall x 150mm, and has 459 pages, 8 b/w plates (5 b/w photos, 4 sketches), index. PHOTOS ARE OF ACTUAL ITEM BEING OFFERED.

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for biography, and the first full-length biography of the conservationist and co-founder of the Sierra Club. Inscribed by Wolfe with a quote by Muir, on July 20, 1945. Wolfe had previously edited John of the Mountains:…The Unpublished Journals of John Muir, published in 1938. She died less than two months after this inscription; her Pulitzer was awarded posthumously. This is a very good copy with faded boards and light tanning to the pages, in a poor, first issue dust jacket (1-45 date code on rear flap and explanation of wartime printing standards on rear panel) that is edgeworn, price-clipped and in four separate pieces, now laid into the book. Rare signed. Unless otherwise noted, our first editions are first printings.

He co-founded the Sierra Club and is often called the "Father of the National Parks". The sixty extant journals and numerous notes in this volume were written from 1869 to 1911.
