Blue cloth rubbed; some scuffing/bumping at spine ends and board corners; small stain at front board's lower center; front board and spine's gilt stamping remains vibrant. Gilt top edge; deckle fore-edge and bottom edge. Toned impressions of old tape and two small remnant toned strips at front pastedown's top left and ffep recto's top right; large personal bookplate of William Kerman Dart on front pastedown; small rectangular bookseller ticket "Hansell's | New Orleans." discreetly affixed at bottom left corner of rear free endpaper recto; a few scattered spots of light foxing and soiling to interior leaves which, overall, remain clean. Binding is firm. A very good- copy. Limitation page has author's signature as "Mary A. Ward" with leaf bound-in immediately preceding frontispiece. Presumably this is the American first edition as well (no direct statement per Harper's contemporary practice but with matching dates upon title and copyright pages). With eight b/w plates (including frontis) all on unpaged leaves; frontis portrait plate retains toned tissue guard sheet.
