When Duchamp moved from Paris to New York in 1915, he was disappointed by the predominantly nature-based abstraction he observed, publicly proclaiming that American artists were too dependent on outmoded European traditions and had overlooked their greatest subjects--the skyscraper and the machine. Meanwhile, the artists associated with Alfred Stieglitz and his "291" gallery remained loyal to their belief in nature as a source of ongoing renewal for visual culture, and emphasized the crucial role that intuition and spirituality played in their creation of art. The crossfire between Duchamp and Stieglitz and their respective circles defined a critical moment in early twentieth-century American art. Debating Modernism includes reproductions of work by artists from both camps, from Charles Demuth, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Paul Strand to Man Ray, Francis Picabia, and Marsden Hartley. An essay by curator Debra Bricker Balken traces the threads of the debate through the 1910s and 20s, and also addresses the appearance of sexualized imagery in nearly all of these artists' works, a phenomenon that ironically unifies the two seemingly opposed camps. Jay Bochner's essay focuses on the artists' respective violations of American expectations about art. 172 pages. Stieglitz, Alfred, 1864-1946--Exhibitions, Duchamp, Marcel, 1887-1968--Exhibitions, Modernism (Art)--United States--Exhibitions, Stieglitz Circle (Group of artists)--Exhibitions.

We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.

Includes List of Other Book(s) by Sebastian Junger; Author Dedication; Introduction; Fire (1992) and Acknowledgments. "What is this fascination that roots fire fighers in their tracks while 300-foot flames twist out of a stand of spruce? Why do journalists - I've done this myself - crawl up to front lines even though there's almost no information of any journalistic value there? .Awe is one of those human traits - like love or hate or fear - that overpowers almost everything else we believe in, at least for a little while. Some people experience awe when they are in the presence of what they understand to be God; others experience it during a hurricane or a rocket attack. In a narrow sense, these situations are all the same: they completely override the concerns of our puny human lives. - from the Introduction and inner front jacket flap. "For readers and viewers of The Perfect Storm, opening this long-awaited new work by Sebastian Junger will be like stepping off the deck of the Andrea Gail and into the inferno of a fire burning out of control in the steep canyons of Idaho. Here is the same meticulous prose brough to bear on the inner workings of a terrifying elemental force; here is a cast of characters risking everything in an effort to bring that force under control. Few writers have been to so many desperate corners of the globe as has Sebastian Junger; fewer still have provided such starkly memorable evocations of characters and events. From the murderous mechanics of the diamond trade in Sierra Leone to the logic of guerrilla warfare in Afghanistan and the fornesics of genocide in Kosovo, this new collection of Junger's nonfiction will take you places you wouldn't dream of going to on your own." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps.

It is in such small communities as those so beautifully photographed by Hugh Palmer that the true spirit of Provence is to be found. Brilliant sunlight slants across jostling terra-cotta roofs, and great plane trees cast velvety shade across ancient squares where the only sound is that of a moss-covered fountain. The Most Beautiful Villages of Provence stunningly evokes the beauty and spirit of Provence, which has drawn visitors to it from ancient times to the present day. Its enduring charm is here celebrated in Palmer's magnificent photographs of such gems as Riez and its fields of lavender or the mysterious cobbled paths of Crestet. These entrancing places, and many others, make this book a lasting tribute to a magical world. Featuring a special listing of hotels, restaurants, festivals, and markets, this book celebrates a part of the world that has entranced millions." ; "Hugh Palmer is one of Britain's leading photographers of architecture and gardens." ; Contents: Vaucluse and Bouches-du-Rhone: Ansouis, Bonnieux and Pont Julien, Crestet, Gordes, Lacost, Lourmarin, Menerbes, Oppede-le-Vieux, Roussillon, Seguret, Vaison-la-ROmaine, Venasque, Eygalieres, Les Baux-de-Provence -- Var and Alpes-Maritimes: Ampus, Bargeman, Cotignac, Entrecasteaux, Les Arcs-sur-Argens, Seillans, Toutour, Trigance, Villecroze, Eze, Le Brigue, Luceram, Peillon, Saint-Paul-de-Vence, Saorge -- Alpes-de-Haute-Provence: Annot, Colmars-les-Alpes, Entrevaux, Lurs, Meailles, Riez ; FAIR/FINE.
