A very nice piece of musichall ephemera: a signed self-caricature by one of its leading lights. See Robey's entry in the Oxford DNB. On a 7 x 8.75 cm piece of card, cut from a plain printed postcard. In good condition, lightly aged, with traces of the four paper label mounts on reverse. On the front, which is entirely plain apart from Robey's writing, is his Autograph Inscription, in a close hand with stylized signature: 'Good luck. Geo Robey.' This is at the foot of the page, beneath a well-executed self-caricature in blue and red ink. Robey has drawn himself, head and shoulders, with a small hat perched at an angle on his head, collarless shirt, and smiling clownlike face, eyes half-closed with mirth, whisps of hair above his ears, thick eyebrows, red nose. On the reverse, written over part of the printed square in which the stamp is meant to be placed, with some printed text to one side of the signature, is 'Lily Morris' in a loose, expansive hand.

Dated March 2, issued June 4, 1896.One of the last books to be printed by Morris and his press before his death in October, 1896. The Kelmscott Press edition was set up from the sheets of the Longmans edition, then being printed by the Chiswick Press, which, though not issued until October, 1896, was finished in 1894.H.G. Wells praised the book and compared Morris to Malory, admiring his style, writing: "All the workmanship of the book is stout oaken stuff, that must needs endure and preserve the memory of one of the stoutest, cleanest lives that has been lived in these latter days." It was highly influential on all subsequent fantasy literature, including inspiring latter, fellow Oxford writers C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, and is among the most important proto-fantasy works ever penned. Recognizable influence abound, such as "ancient tables of stone," "Gandolf," a "King Peter," and a marvelous white horse named "Silverfax," namesake (if not exact) of "Shadowfax." "It is the lengthiest of [Morris's] fantasy novels, probably the longest in the genre before J.R.R. Tolkien's LORD OF THE RINGS (1954-1955), and it remains one of the most complex and beautiful fantasy quests ever written." [Fantasy: The Liberation of Imagination, by Richard Mathews, p. 44]. [Peterson A39; Magill, Survey of Modern Fantasy Literature V, p. 2091, Colbeck 78]. Bookplate of Frederick John Hancock Lloyd. Occasional slight toning and only minimal foxing in some places in the margins. Condition overall: Near Fine. 2.5 Large 4to: 11 13/16 " x 8 5/16" x 2 1/4" (30 x 21.1 x 5.7 cm).
