Moritz Borchardt (1868-1948) "publizierte zusammen mit Oppenheim in den Jahren 1906-1918 neun Arbeiten über Hirn- und Rückenmarkschirurgie sowie einen Beitrag über die Medianuslähmung. Nach seinem Medizinstudium in Zürich, Berlin, Leipzig und Heidelberg, erhielt er in Berlin seine internistische und chirurgische Ausbildung am Krankenhaus am Urban sowie als Schüler von Bergmann an der chirurgischen Universitätsklinik. 1901 habilitierte er sich und wurde 1905 Extraordinarius sowie Leiter der chirurgischen Abteilung des neu gegründeten Rudolf-Virchow-Krankenhauses. 1917 wurde er zum Geheimen Medizinalrat ernannt und übernahm 1919 die Leitung der chirurgischen Abteilung des Krankenhauses Moabit, die 1920 "III. Chirurgische Klinik der Medizinischen Fakultät" wurde, wurde er von den Nationalsozialisten entlassen, emigrierte 1938 nach Südamerika und starb 1948 in Buenos Aires. Er wirkte prägend für seine Assistenten, konnte jedoch keine eigene Schule entwickeln. Er gehörte zu den vielen jüdischen Ärzten, denen die Berliner Medizin ihren Ruf verdankt. This work, also known as "Bilderzyklus" (Der Zyklus), is perhaps the most well-known example of Jewish genre painting. Up until W.W.I it was the highest selling Jewish-German work. "Moritz Daniel Oppenheim, who lived in Frankfurt, was the first Jewish painter of the modern era. The range of his work is impressive, spanning religious, literary and historical themes as well as allegories and portraits. He became world-famous with his "Scenes from Traditional Jewish Family Life. Oppenheim was the first Jewish painter to receive academic training in Germany." (Jüdische Museum, Frankfurt). "Oppenheim's "Scenes from Traditional Jewish Family Life" may also be interpreted as a statement on German Jews' cultural affiliation. Bourgeois values bordering on cliché, such as piety, sense of family, education and respectability, are brought to the fore through historical genre painting, thus emphasizing alignment with the Christian bourgeoisie's guiding principles. This contrasts later with Orientalism, which focused on the exotic. These paintings enabled the majority population to identify with the foreign traditions and customs of Jews. Hoofien. Moritz Daniel Oppenheim (1800-1882) was a German painter who is often regarded as the first Jewish painter of the modern era. He was inspired by his own Jewish cultural and religious roots at a time when many of his German Jewish contemporaries chose to convert to Christianity. He was born to Orthodox Jewish parents at Hanau and entered the Munich Academy of Arts at the age of seventeen. He later studied in Paris under Jean-Baptiste Regnault. In Rome he studied the life of the Jewish ghetto and made sketches of the various phases of its domestic and religious life in preparation for several large canvases, which he painted on his return to Germany. He received the title of professor in 1832 from the Grand Duke Karl August of Saxe-Weimar. Rabbi Jacob Hoofien (1846-1886) trained in Amsterdam and became the Rabbi of Utrecht in 1875, having published a handbook on history of the Jews a few years prior.

Each plate measures approximately 7.5 x 9" and is printed in high quality heliogravure after the original paintings, on tissue, laid down on heavy card stock. All plates feature captions beneath in German, and have their original tissue guards. Scenes include, Sabbath observance, Bar-mitzvah, a wedding, the synagogue, the Festival of Sukkot, and Purim among many others. Text in German. This is a newer edition of the initial 1882 collection, originally issued as a portfolio. Binding with some light bumping and rubbing to the extremities, and some minor rippling to the boards.
