Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. Dogs are as ubiquitous in American culture as white picket fences and apple pie, embracing all the meanings of wholesome domestic lifefamily, fidelity, comfort, protection, nurturance, and loveas well as symbolizing some of the less palatable connotations of home and family, including domination, subservience, and violence. In Picturing Dogs, Seeing Ourselves, Ann-Janine Morey presents a collection of antique photographs of dogs and their owners in order to investigate the meanings associated with the canine body. Included are reproductions of 115 postcards, cabinet cards, and cartes de visite that feature dogs in family and childhood snapshots, images of hunting, posed studio portraits, and many other settings between 1860 and 1950. These photographs offer poignant testimony to the American romance with dogs and show how the dog has become part of cultural expressions of race, class, and gender.Animal studies scholars have long argued that our representation of animals in print and in the visual arts has a profound connection to our lived cultural identity. Other books have documented the depiction of dogs in art and photography, but few have reached beyond the subjects obvious appeal. Picturing Dogs, Seeing Ourselves draws on animal, visual, and literary studies to present an original and richly contextualized visual history of the relationship between Americans and their dogs. Though the personal stories behind these everyday photographs may be lost to us, their cultural significance is not. Explores antique photographs of people and their dogs to expand the understanding of visual studies, animal studies, and American culture. Uses the canine body as a lens to investigate the cultural significance of family and childhood portraits, pictures of hunters, and racially charged images. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Añadir al carritoHardcover / Hardback. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Fine. First edition. hardback. With Foreword by M. Joan McDermott. A tragedy and a murder trial placed the author in an ideal position to write this wrenching exploration of the havoc wreaked on a family by Shaken Baby Syndrome. As an alternate juror in a 1995 trial in Murphysboro, Illinois, she observed a case that is all too common: a live-in boyfriend fatally shook a 19-month old baby. The author witnessed the court proceedings firsthand, came to know the families of the toddler intimately, and augmented her observations and interviews though research into Shaken Baby Syndrome. The result is an agonisingly human tale supported by the evidence of science, sociology, and criminology. Gary Lynn Gould, who was convicted of and imprisoned for killing Christopher, did not answer the author's requests for interviews. She provides a juror's insight into the trial. She discusses the red herrings floated by the defence attorney - long-term undiagnosed skull fractures and the "accumulated fatal injury over time" - and presents medical testimony that proves these theories absurd, thus alerting all of us to arguments commonly used by the defence. By showing what happened to Christopher Attig and by presenting the accumulated findings relative to Shaken Baby Syndrome, she seeks through education to help prevent further deaths like Christopher's. with Resources on Shaken Baby syndrome and Child Abuse. 168pp. 8vo. h/back. From the library of true crime writer, Wilfred Gregg, with his personal b/plate. F. in F. dw.
