Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the Infant Life Protection Act of 1897, a piece of legislation that aims to safeguard infants kept in private care for financial gain. The author meticulously examines the efficacy of the Act, particularly with regards to one-child homes. Exploring the legal provi…sions and their loopholes, the book presents a balanced perspective on the need to extend these regulations to one-child homes, where many infants remain unprotected. The author also delves into the issue of raising the age limit for protection under the Act, considering both sides of the debate. Through a comprehensive analysis of evidence from experts, including those from the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, this book provides valuable insights into the complex landscape of child protection. By highlighting the loopholes in the current legislation and presenting a compelling case for reform, the author underscores the urgency of protecting all vulnerable infants. This book is a must-read for policymakers and advocates striving to strengthen the safety net for young children in need. Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book provides a thorough examination of the momentous change in Britain's criminal justice system brought about by the 1853 Act, which replaced transportation with penal servitude. The author, a Home Office official closely involved in the bill's preparation, shares insights into…the motivations behind the shift and its consequences. The book traces the decline of transportation as a viable punishment, detailing the influence of the Molesworth Committee and growing opposition in Australia. It explores the difficulties faced by the government in finding an alternative, ultimately opting for penal servitude with a 'ticket-of-leave' system. The author provides statistics on the numbers transported and sentenced to penal servitude, analyzing the effectiveness of the new regime. The book also sheds light on the challenges of dealing with female convicts, for whom no suitable employment or rehabilitation options existed. The author discusses the potential benefits of establishing a new penal colony and the difficulties of continuing to incarcerate the worst offenders within Britain. By presenting a detailed account of this significant transition in criminal justice policy, the author offers valuable insights into the complexities of punishment, rehabilitation, and the evolving nature of British society in the mid-19th century. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. The book offers insights into the history and traditions of these institutions, the educational philosophies of the time, and the ongoing debate over the role of private schools in British society. Ultimately, the select committee's report and the resulting Public Schools Act of 1868 had a profound impact on the future of these schools and continue to inform discussions about educational reform today. Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book examines the working of The Margarine Act, 1887, and The Sale of Food and Drugs Act, 1875, and any Acts amending the same. The author was part of the team responsible for the administration of these Acts and provides a considered analysis of their efficacy and shortcomings. T…he Acts have empowered local authorities to appoint analysts and obtain samples for testing, with the intention of reducing the adulteration of food and protecting consumers. The author provides detail on the way these Acts have been received by analysts and local authorities as well as the public, and discusses key legal judgments which have shaped the Acts' implementation. The author explores the challenges of enforcing legislation due to the sophistication of modern adulteration techniques, the difficulty of proving intent, and the fact that some adulterants may not be harmful to health. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book is an 1882 report summarizing evidence collected by a Select Committee regarding two proposed bills to reform and administer the Parochial Charities of the City of London. The first bill aimed to consolidate all City charities under one body. The second bill proposed the esta…blishment of a representative body for each parish. Evidence was presented to the Committee from representatives of city parishes and charities, as well as from the Charity Commissioners. The Committee ultimately decided to proceed with the second bill, which formed the basis of the Parochial Charities (London) Act of 1883. This book provides valuable insights into the history and administration of charitable giving in the City of London during the Victorian era.
