A good, very clean and sound copy in contemporary quarter leather binding, has title decorative gilt on black banded spine, leather corners to dull worn geyish cloth boards with decorative gilt horseshoe encircling horse head on front cover. Has bright marbled endpapers, is split between colour fronticspiece and blank page facing decorative colour title page but still firmly attached. The pages of text and illustrations are clean, bright and unmarked. Complete with all 14 chromolithographic plates and 36 monochrome engraved plates, with numerous engraving throughout the text. All colour and b/w plates as called for in instructions for binding. Undated circa 1870's (By reference to the most recent Turf celebrities mentioned in the Horse Racing chapters being 1872 and previous owner name and date slip 1876). Whilst the book is redundant as regards many of the medicinal remedies and treatments there is much of enduring interest for the Equine enthusiast including much on horse racing and pedigrees of turf celebrities. Please see our images of the actual book offered for sale for further details and condition. VG ( Restoration work - The book was bought in by us as a tight back with the leather to the front hinge failing. We have therefore re backed it with replacement calf leather and the original spine laid on. In course thereof the old spine lining was removed the spine cleaned- re-glued with p.v.a. new linen mull, Oxford Hollow back strip and new best match green made end papers fitted. The attractive gilt tooled leather previous owner name and date slip has been replaced to the front paste down. One leaf is a little rubbed and prominent at fore edge but is secure in the binding and we have resisted trimming. Occassional marginal soiling and the odd page corner turned but complete with some contemporary newsprint articles loosely laid in including a wonderful advert for Prof. Norton B. Smith's Training Bridle - 2s.6d by Mail Order! No other notable defects). A very heavy tome and regrettably a significant additional charge will need be made for overseas shipping.

An unusually attractive copy of this copiously illustrated copy of this fascinating study of modern veterinary practices, primarily focusing on the management of horses. The first section of this work examines the history of the horse (with an extensive exploration and comparison of horse breeds), the structure and anatomy of the horse, the practice of veterinary medicine, and a history of horse racing. This copy also contains information regarding the management of other farm animals, such as cattle, sheep, pigs, by J. I. Lupton. In a half polished calf binding with attractive marbled paper boards, endpapers and textblock. Containing copious illustrations throughout depicting attractive sporting scenes, the anatomy of the horse, and pictorial representations of the process of shoeing the animal, engraved from original drawings by Benjamin Herring. Collated, incomplete with: Twelve plates to the main text (three of which are coloured), lacking plates of 'The Roadster (Surefoot)', 'The Trotting Cob (Silvertail) and 'Portrait of Thormanby (Racer)'. With three additional plates: 'The Stable and Stable Fittings' facing page 124, a coloured plate of 'Sir Bevys' facing page 511, and a coloured plate of 'Isonomy' facing page 516. Twenty coloured plates to the 'Atlas of Anatomical Plates', four of which are coloured. Collated complete but bound out of order. Five coloured plates to the 'Essay on Diseases of Cattle, Sheep, and Pigs', collated complete. This copy is undated, dated using Copac. In a half crushed morocco binding with cloth covered boards. Externally very smart, with minor shelfwear to extremities and the odd light mark to boards. Slight rubbing to head and tail of spines and joints. Hinges reinforced. Two very small closed tears to fore edge of rear free-endpaper. Prior owner's faint pencil inscription to verso of front free-endpaper. Internally firmly bound. Pages very slightly age toned to extremities, but very bright and clean throughout. Faint tidemark to lower fore edge of anatomical plate XII, not affecting image. Very Good Indeed. book.
