Octavo, slim illustrated paper wraps. 15pp.(Originally published in 1927 by Raduga publishing house, which was closed down by the Soviet authorities in 1930) All surviving editions are rare, most have gone through the hands of Soviet-era children. The 'plane' referred to is a carpenter's tool, which has grown old and assists in the making of a new plane with his friends, the saw, the mallet and the chisel. Lebedev [1891-1967] and Samuil Marshak [1887-1964] together created some of the most groundbreaking work in the field of Children's literature in the 1920s. Later, after the publishing house, Raduga was shut down by the authorities Lebedev was 'encouraged' to move his illustrative work in the direction of Soviet Realism. Marshak, a Jew continued to walk a political tightrope in the Soviet Union, but survived various purges.

This unusual children's story by Marshak features the tumultuous relationship between an old woman and her poodle. Illustrated with extraordinary drawings, reproduced in chromolithographs, by Lebedev, known for combining cubist techniques with the elements of folk 'lubok' in highly original representations. Text in Russian. Light wear along edges of wraps with small chips and age-toned. Block separated from covers but complete, and lightly age-toned. Wraps in overall good+, interior in very good condition. Samuil Yakovlevich Marshak (1887 1964) was a Russian and Soviet writer of Jewish decent, translator and children's poet. He is considered "the founder of Russia's (Soviet) children's literature." (Maxim Gorki). Vladimir Vasilyevich Lebedev (1891 1967) was a Soviet painter and graphic artist considered the "King of the Children's Book" in the 1920s. Next to Poodle he worked with Marshal on the titles Circus, Ice Cream, Tale About a Foolish Mouse, Moustached and Striped, Book of Many Colours, Twelve Months and Luggage.

A very fresh example of this masterpiece of graphic design by Vladimir Lebedev (1891-1967), who successfully worked with Marshak on many children's books. Their collaboration looms large as one of the most innovative collaborations in Soviet design.

Marshak was a central figure in the production of children's books after the Revolution of 1917 who often worked with Raduga, the "most influential of the early Soviet children's book publishers" and Lebedev, "the greatest of Russian picture book artists" (Hearn). Lebedev's constant experimentation and avant-garde aesthetic brought a remarkable dynamic into picture books; as Michael Patrick Hearn says, "Every book was a masterpiece of modern graphic design." TSIRK not only their first collaboration but also viewed by many as their best: its influence across Russian picture books, and further, into European modernism, is difficult to overstate. 11'' x 8.5''.
