Hardcover. Thick quarto bound in early full vellum.; Fair; The vellum shows moderate soiling and wear, and the front pastedown has tiny ink inscriptions. The paper is at times heavily faded and wobbly with slight offsetting not affecting text. The first 53 pages and first 20 plates are water-stained along the fore edge; the back of plate 42 contains blue and black ink signatures. The title page is absent. The following sections are present: Geometry, Perspective, Symmetry, Doric Columns, and Fortification. The volume also contains a Table of Dimensions of Fortifications. The following plates are present: AA, 4-10, 14-17, 17-24, 30, 32-35, 41, 42, 9-14, 16-18, 23, 24, 5, 8-39, 43-46, 11, 17-23, 26-30, 33, 37, 38, 51, 59, 60, 62-65, 74-79, Z, AA-EE, 1-10, for a total of 117 plates. Samuel Marolois (1572-before 1627) was a Dutch military engineer and mathematician. He was particularly recognized for his work in the field of perspective, and his treatise on the subject was published in numerous early editions and translations. 1327532. Special Collections.

FIRST ENGLISH EDITION 1638, divided into two parts, reviewed, augmented and corrected by Albert Girard, Mathematician. & translated out of the French into English by Henry Hexam. 4to, approximately 280 x 190 mm, 11 x 7½ inches, 40 numbered double page plates, but 42 in total as there are 2 extra plates numbered "2e, 14" and "2e, 17", engraved title page which is from the Amsterdam Dutch edition of 1627 with printed cancel slip of title and date pasted over the original printing, this is the same as the Sotheby's Macclesfield copy (see note below). Pages: [4], 1- 44 to first Part; 1- 48 pages to 2nd Part, followed by a double page table, woodcut initials, head- and tailpieces. Handsomely rebound in full panelled calf, heavy gilt decoration to spine, raised bands, gilt lettered maroon label, new endpapers, the collation is the same as in Cockle. Lower margin of engraved title page trimmed off with slight loss to image, pale staining to upper and lower margins throughout, just affecting some images, a few lower margins have small closed tears neatly repaired, page 24 has 2 small repairs to upper margin, not affecting text, plates slightly dusty, minor tiny ink spots to a few pages, repaired closed tear to centrefold of plate 17, no loss to images, pale staining to centrefold and slightly dusty and grubby to last plate No.40 (see image), all text pages have strong horizontal crease, old ink name scribbled out on upper margin of title page, not affecting image, neat old ink name of previous owner and small partially erased pale private library stamp on the blank side of title page, a few tiny nicks to margins. La perspective était pour lui une branche des mathématiques. Ces planches ont été gravées par Hondius, la plupart ont été dessinées par Vredeman de Vries et les planches 54-59 d'après les dessins du peintre Pieter Stevens. Belle page de titre gravée en tête de la première partie et une autre pour la seconde partie. Sur cette dernière, un cartouche contrecollé au centre porte curieusement le titre de "Perspective 5e partie de Joan Vredem Vriese augmentée et corrigée en divers endroits par Samuel Marolois", mais tous les exemplaires sont ainsi.
