Platte so gut wie tadellos. Erste Schallplattenaufnahmen der meisten dieser 17 frühen Lieder ohne opus-Nr., nur drei, davon zwei der acht Brettl-Lieder, waren schon zuvor auf Platte erschienen. Im Wiener Carltheater, dessen musikalische Leitung Schönbergs Schwager Alexander v. Zemlinsky übernommen hatte, gastierte 1901 das Berliner literarische Kabarett Überbrettl, das Ernst von Wolzogen im selben Jahr gegründet hatte. Da am Tag des jüdischen Versöhnungsfestes dessen musikalischer Leiter Oskar Straus(s) auf Befehl seines reichen Erbonkels nicht auftreten durfte, konnte stellvertretend der junge Schönberg an diesem Abend übernehmen. In Folge komponierte Schönberg dann zwischen April und September des Jahres diese acht Kabarett-Lieder und bot sie Wolzogen an, der zwei davon erwarb und darauf Schönberg als Kapellmeister des Überbrettls engagierte, der diese Stelle dann bis 1903 bekleidete. Die Kabarett-Lieder nach Gedichten von Frank Wedekind, Otto Julius Bierbaum, Hugo Salus, Gustav Hochstetter, Colly (d.i. Carl Mönckeberg), Emanuel Schikaneder und Gustav Falke. Die anderen Lieder nach Nikolaus Lenau, Paul Heyse, Richard Dehmel, Hugo v. Hofmannsthal, Johann Wolfgang v. Goethe und unbekannt. Die Sängerin Marni Nixon (1930-2016) war als Konzertsängerin Komponisten der Moderne wie Paul Hindemith, Anton Webern etc.zugewandt u.a.
